Mel Gibson claims to have turned down "Odin" role.

ETA: Nothing against Gibson's acting ability, I just think Hopkins is so much better of a fit. Marvel gave RDJ a chance after some questionable life decisions, so this makes sense on that level. So does Marvel of the era trying to low-ball a big name trying to shake off some controversy.

Yeah, I just can't see Gibson bring the same kind of gravitas to the role that Hopkins did. The only actors who immediately come to mind who I can think of that would be able to really do it the way Hopkins did would be actors like Patrick Stewart or Ian McKellen.
Gibson could have been good, but it would have been a very different version of the character.
I was looking up how to spell Ian McKellen's name and I saw another Ian Mc... who would could have been an interesting Odin, Ian McShane. Just image the internet meme possibilities with that one.

I for one hope that they never recast him. I've always been a fan of Anthony Hopkins and was overjoyed to hear he was going to play Odin. Characters done by legendary actors like him can only be killed off or rebooted if you ask me.

And I don't think Gibson could do a quarter of what Hopkins brings to the table. Gibson would make a better general than a king.

There's a rumor that the Cotati might appear in Thor: Ragnarok. I'm not familiar with them, but the article says that they are responsible for Mantis having powers in the comics, so there might be some kind of a connection to GOTG Vol 2 here.

I'd like that. Not because I know of the comics or anyting, but I do like the little interconnections between the MCU movies, and when Gunn said a week or so ago that GotG2 would in no way lead up to anything or set up Infinity Wars and be a complete stand-alone film, I was both glad about that, but also a bit meh if there would be no connection to the rest of the MCU. So yeah, this would be nice.

Well, if you think about it, the Thor movies are all a bit Masters of the Universe-ish, right?
