This year's first snow....

In the storm that just hit us, the wind was so bad that parts of my driveway were covered in snow up to darn near waist height. It felt like 1975 all over again. I had to walk to work this morning 'cuz it was 6 AM and I could never shovel it all that quick (didn't wake up early enough).

I want a snowblower, dammit. :scream:

Thankfully it has stopped raining and the sky is clearing. With a little luck this will all dry out and tomorrow won't be so messy. And that would be helped by the temperature not getting too mild or else there'll be a lot of slush and melted snow about.

When I left for work this morning, around 7:20, there were three inches or so of slush on the ground and it was raining. I got to the end of the subway line and waited about 20 minutes for a bus (it was scheduled to arrive five minutes after I did). It then took over an hour to make what is normally a 25-minute trip. I got off the bus, walked to the corner and noted what appeared to be about two or three inches of water in the gutter. I decided to just step into it and bear my feet getting a bit damp... and discovered too late that the water was actually up to my thighs. I'm not sure how that's possible - the road isn't that far below the sidewalk, and I didn't think I was standing on a pile of snow before stepping down. But that area of Mississauga has terrible drainage - the parking lot behind my office turns into a lake whenever it rains.

Oh, and I was then soaked by an 18-wheeler going through the intersection at full speed.

My feet finally started to feel a bit dry around 4:30, thanks to having my shoes off whenever I was actually at my desk.

I think that tomorrow I'll be wearing my boots, and I'll put an extra pair of socks into my backpack.

Mind you, it could probably be worse - I remember one day last winter when we got about three feet of snow, and the bus I was on got stuck on ice. The driver kicked us off between stops, and while walking back to the previous stop, I couldn't tell whether I was on the sidewalk or the road. At least where I work now, the walk between the office and the bus stop is shorter and it's completely paved.

Windy much of the day dried things out hereabouts. After all the bitching yesterday over some snow and then rain today the roads were dry and clear. In fact, for pedestrians, it was more hazardous this morning walking across parking lots with patches of ice then it was yesterday with slushy snow.

We're supposed to be getting our first snow here tonight, about four inches, ending with a nice coating of ice from freezing rain tomorrow afternoon. I think I'll be sleeping in.

We had light snow this evening to cap off a chilly, windy day. Everything is dry. No forecast for snow for the next bit. The weather is appropriate, though, because tomorrow I'll be playing Santa at my work's morning meeting and then for a couple of hours in the store in the early afternoon.

This last storm dumped more snow on us than the last three winters have, I think. I wasn't kidding when I said that the snow drifts were almost up to waist height in my driveway. I did more shoveling in two days than I did in a year's worth. It looks really weird in my neighborhood because the snow is piled so high, it looks like I'm living in a damn canyon.

Fine time for my furnace to die on me too. :brickwall: Oh well, at least the heating company sent out an emergency call like I asked. 300 bucks.. :brickwall:
