This Side Of Paradise

Or that "sting" cue: "DAH-daaaaaaahhhh" which is forever popping into my head whenever ANYthing happens ANYwhere in my life.

I think the cue works great in Shore Leave. The type of episode it is, plus the fact that it was written specifically for that episode, helps a lot.
I stand corrected. According to the Star Trek Compendium, “Shore Leave” was filmed in late October 1966, and “This Side of Paradise” in early January 1967. Whatever -- it's still a pretty theme.
And Jill Ireland: God, she annoys me no end. I could deal with the music but for her grating performance. They should have gone with the Hawaiian chick for Sulu idea.
Aw c'mon, Jill Ireland wasn't that bad. Did an early draft of the script have a love interest for Sulu? That would have been cool. Would've been a great role for Nancy Kwan. She was magically babealicious!

Whatever, I always hated the music as used in this episode; it's syrupy, and smashes us over the head with "Spock's IN LOVE!"

Exactly.

I know variations of this were used in other eps. I had the same reaction to it there.

Anyone know the combination of Kirk's safe from this episode? I asked Shatner once at a convention, and he went ballistic.

The Deadly Years reused the love theme from Mirror, Mirror repeatedly every time Janice Wallace opens her mouth. "Oh Jim, I'm sorry. Truly I am." Yikes.

Her voice grates on me. Really never liked her much. She's from the Susan Oliver school of "Stop Talking You're Ruining It" Actresses. But that's only me. Actually, Ms. Oliver was fine in The Cage, but some of her other work (particularly The Fugitive) was like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Yep, in fact they changed the character but kept her name intact. The rewrite of the original script was what got DC Fontana her staff job.

From Memory Alpha:

In Jerry Sohl's original draft (first titled "Power Play," then "The Way of The Spores"), it was Lieutenant Sulu who was infected by the spores and was able to fall in love with the Eurasian beauty Leila. McCoy discovered an internal condition that would have necessitated Sulu's resignation from Starfleet service, had the spores not cured his condition.

Would've been a great role for Nancy Kwan. She was magically babealicious!

Yeah, I liked her too.

Hey, you're talking about one of my major adolescent crushes. I adored Susan Oliver. A beautiful and talented actress, and an accomplished pilot to boot! I would have flown with her anywhere. :luvlove:
