why would anyone want to fly in one of those fighters?
I sure as heck wouldn't want to.
Think about it. They may get off one shot before the sensors lock on and you're toast. We did see this happen often enough in DS9.

Kinda reminds me of The Ark from the old Transformers cartoons.OMG this one makes me think of the Millennium Falcon

It's those pod things under the top of the "wings", isn't it? They kind of remind me of the add-ons from the old Jetfire toy.
I like this design as an impromptu mesh, think the designer needs a slap if it was envisioned as a whole this way.
Honestly, with the advanced technology of Trek, you should probably never *be aware* of ship-to-ship combat until it is over. One ship would sense another, computer would match a profile, and then respond with warp drive and light speed weapons to carve the other ship up before it can respond. And lest you think *Starfleet* would never do that... they would have no choice. As soon as some other species did that - and they would - everyone else would have to automate as best they can or die without a fight.
Slow naval style ship battles with their tech are nonsense. But I won't complain too much, because they DO make for better TV than what I'm describing.
I believe the implication is that it looks more like self-indulgent fanfiction, despite being official concept art.
I could be wrong, though.
