This Island Earth needs to be remade now!

This Island Earth needs to be remade now!

Absolutely. I mean, Hollywood did so well with the remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL.

Not.

When a film is a classic, I don't know what you can do with it in the way of a remake without ruining it.

The only possibility is to just do what they did in the attempted PSYCHO remake, namely just refilm the movie with a new cast, and try to leave the story and presentation alone.

Thing is, then you sort of say "Umm...why did they do this? We still have the original which is identical to this."

The only point would be to see new, currently known actors in the roles.

...And to see what they do with the giant insect-servant monster. :D

The remake for DTESS was awesome in my opinion. Yes, some remakes are just better despite the idea that something that's older and has been seen for decades must be a classic.

I much prefer the remake to be of the book rather than the movie....AND NO MUTANTS or BEMS other than the Guarra agents. It would be better in every way than the original movie.

Keep in mind the MST3K version suffers from many problems of the Hollywood nonsense as the MST3K version is from MST3K's movie. Just some quick notes about the MST3K version -

  • The movie is several minutes shorter than an episode of the TV series.
  • They were forced by the studio to pick a "good" movie, or a more classic movie, from Universal's vault to riff on, so a movie audience wouldn't be froced to pay theater-money to watch a B-Grade movie.
  • The riffs were dumbed down to be more understable or appealing to general audience members.

This Island Earth is mostly a classic, and the MST3K movie is far from the best work they did during the Comedy Central era. It's product of studio meddling and it shows.

Infact, an episode of MST3K actualy riffed on the experience they had working on MST3K: The Movie as part of the host-segments in the episode for "The Incredible Melting Man."

To be fair, This Island Earth was a high budgeted B movie that was one of the best on MST3K, but a lot of it is really dated...the acting style, the dialgoue, the "science". There IS a lot to make fun of! This is not WHY I think it should be remade but it sure would help. The original Raymond F. Jones story is simply better.
