This is why there will be no new TV Trek for the forseeable future.

Re: This is why there will be no new TV Trek for the forseeable future

The models to follow would be the successful sf/f series based on novels and graphic novels - Game of Thrones, True Blood and The Walking Dead. A space opera series that has the elements of those stories would be the most likely candidate. Heavy character emphasis, complex politics and character relationships, sex and sexual jealousy, angst and violence....

Like, maybe, Dune?

If the crew's mission were more personal, say a rescue mission went awry to save the president of the Federation or a reality shifting series a la GR's other pilots Mission: Genisis or Planet Earth where the crew never leaves physically kind of thing but has to search the ruins of ancient Earth to get back aboard the Enterprise. A non linear thing.

'Catching lightning in a bottle'. The divine spark to JJ was lens flares. . . .

Hilarious. Keep, 'em coming, X. Happy New Year, btw, also.

Sure, that might work. I personally have never found the characters sympathetic enough to really grab my interest, but that might be solved by good casting.

Too limited to be the premise of a whole series.

Why would that premise need to be Star Trek in particular? Sounds like a JMS thing.

I'm been waiting for a mini-series adaptation of The Mote in God's Eye ever since I saw the mini-series Dune.

Re: This is why there will be no new TV Trek for the forseeable future

Building sets for a television show like TNG or the last Battlestar Galactica is just prohibitively expensive. No one wants to take that chance. Besides, the way the networks have been doing business lately, it’s kind of bizarre. They’ll cancel a show after one episode.

Bull, bull, BULL!

They can't produce it because they don't have anything to produce. Nobody's got a viable idea and nobody's creative enough to take the helm of the series. There's no creatives left in Hollywood...it's nothing but businessmen.

If they had somebody with vision they'd throw money at them like pennies in a fountain.

I just e-mailed Les Moonves my sci-fi pilot that I might be willing to convert into Star Trek for AMC or TNT. Wish me luck. It might be like selling Manhattan for $24, but I might also may not be able to give it away either, the way the market is.
If I told you what it was about, I would have to kill you all. I also e-mailed Erik Storey at the sci-fi channel but I was told, in essance, that you have to be god to pitch to him and my e-mail was promptly deleted by a receptionist. She's working her way up the ladder, I guess.. Envelope writing campaign snowball barrage blitz is next. It starts with one a week, then two, then two or three a day with a picture of the trees it's killing.
Without an agent presently it is highly unlikely that I'll be in the same elevator as good ol' Les at the CBS central corperate mega fortress in the city any time soon
unless I get a job in maintenance. We'll see.

Congratulations on your success so far. I hope your idea bears much fruit and you get an encouraging reply.

There are plenty of creative people in the TV biz, and I doubt the bean counters are any more in the ascendancy than they've ever been. Vince Gilligan with Breaking Bad, Kurt Sutter with Sons of Anarchy, Frank Darabont lately of The Walking Dead who now has LA Noir in the works...

Those aren't space opera ideas, but space opera is just one sub-genre within a genre so it's unsurprising that it hasn't benefitted from some creative person with clout championing it. There's no getting around the deadly combo of limited audience plus unusually high degree of expense.

Thanks Matt. I think it's the best thing since 'Scrooge' but it's hard not to think one is delusional. I write sci-fi music best but I think my premise is unique and original enough as it takes place within it's own seperate continuity so it side steps the little titan all together which they should like.

Find an entertainment lawyer ASAP. No one will look at anything unless it's properly submitted with all the legalese intact.

Re: This is why there will be no new TV Trek for the forseeable future

You're probably wasting your breath. xortex seems to live in a world where he thinks going from his mom's basement to an executive producer's suite on a studio lot is as simple as sending an e-mail. The idea of paying your dues and working your way through the ranks is for "sons of suits". Getting help from a lawyer? They're the biggest sons of suits around!

Re: This is why there will be no new TV Trek for the forseeable future

I'm sure he can find a lawyer who will take his money and do nothing, laughing all the while. I'm sure there are "entertainment lawyers" who specialize in nothing but defrauding the deluded. Beats working for a living.

Re: This is why there will be no new TV Trek for the forseeable future

I think I'm entitled to my subjective delusions like everyone else.

Re: This is why there will be no new TV Trek for the forseeable future

Of course you could all be wrong and our friend xortex could be the next big thing and his pilot could sell, and do quite well. Never give up one's dreams. That is a lesson I can pass on to some of you.

Re: This is why there will be no new TV Trek for the forseeable future

It is highly illogical to assume the worst in this matter, I think he has a good chance with his pilot, my friends.

Re: This is why there will be no new TV Trek for the forseeable future

Just out of curiosity, how do you know? Women are usually telepathic and know everything and it's usually only bad. Men are just the opposite and it's usually only good. Eh, cats and dogs. It's all about me, me, let meowt, take meowt, purrrr.. Rough. That's rough. Life's rough.
