Things you're shocked people don't know

I'm just saying that I don't think those issues will ever be resolved, but you're free to work on that if you want. :p

After reading most of the posts in this thread I'm like, ashamed to post one of my own as it has very little to do with intelligence.....

but for years I've used the expression, "She's a Stepford Wife" or "They're a bunch of Stepford Wives" (in regards to the PTA ladies) and my husband would say something like, "Oh, wow"......it wasn't until last year (after saying this for like 30 years) he finally 'fessed up. He had no idea what that meant!!!

I thought everyone knew what that meant!!

A few things that sometimes amazes me is the fact that in this country, when we go to the polls for a General Election, we aren't actually voting for the leader of the party, but the party itself, some people forget this.

No, we actually vote to elect an MP to represent our local consituency. It's the party with the most MPs who get to try and form a government -- in coalition with other parties if they have no outright majority, or by calling another election if they want to try to improve their majority.

Indeed, I did know that, I was just saying that many people think we vote for the leader and not the party. In many areas, like here, the political map is very Blue, has been for decades, regardless of the MP standing.

Yes, sorry, I was a little too much in pedantic mode there.

After years of working around lower class folks, being related to numbskulls and often living in the Bible belt, there's nothing should surprise me anymore. But there are college grads who don't even know basic history. And this is often true of women, unless you mention the Tudors or some shit.

Some of you were discussing American Football earlier, now I'm British and our national sport is allegedly football, but I have no idea what the off side rule is, nor do I frankly care.

It's pretty simple in most cases actually (there are a thousand exception of course), and it is something people could/should know imo. 9 out of 10 cases it's like this:
At the exact time when the passing player touches the ball before passing it, there still has to be at least one member of the defending team (+ the goalie) between the player who receives the pass and the goal.
The intent of that rule is to prevent players from hanging around the opposing goal the entire time, which would result in the defenders also staying there and the game would then consist completely of the teams kicking the ball back and forth between the two goals with no actual tactics or gameplay.

People who think that the Aurora Borealis (and presumably, Australis) can be turned on or off using a “big switch”.
Now, that's one I've never heard before!

I've read that some people think NASA has a big “zero-g room” at Cape Canaveral or Houston that's used to train astronauts to work in weightlessness. They must think gravity is something you can switch on and off like electricity.

Technically, in the U.S., when we go to the polls we aren't actually voting for Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates either; we're voting for a slate of faceless “electors.”

There's always talk about changing our Rube Goldberg electoral system, but any significant change would require a Constitutional amendment, so it's not likely to happen anytime soon. One problem with direct popular election would be that the 8 or 10 largest cities would essentially choose the President, and the rest of the country would become irrelevant.

Now explain 2nd phase and/or 'becoming active'.

Well that can be achieved temporarily by disabling the Otis braking system and cutting the elevator cables. The result does tend to be messy and counter productive to further progress in training, however.

Of course, technically that produces a brief state of free-fall, but doesn't nullify gravity. The temporarily weightless elevator car and its contents will regain their weight rather abruptly, I should think.

In fact, NASA's infamous astronaut training airplanes, known as "Vomit Comets," do essentially the same thing when they go into a free-fall dive, during which the aircraft and everything inside it is weightless.

Gravity isn't nullified in orbit either -- the weightlessness is the same kind as that you'd experience in free fall (neglecting air resistance). Anyway, let us blame Hollywood.

Or maybe they're thinking of the *underwater* complex that's used for that purpose.
