Things you just noticed when re-watching Enterprise.

I had not watched any Enterprise for a couple months so last night I decided to try out the DVD's on my new big-screen TV. While the visuals were nice and my Sony Blue-Ray player did a nice job of upconverting my DVD's, it was a dialog that threw me. All this time I thought it was Travis "Merriweather". The first time Archer said Mayweather I backed up the video and played it again. Of course, dense me, wondered if they decided to change the name to Merriweather sometime after the first episode. Hey, don't laugh. They changed Trip's home. ... Anyway, I just popped over to the official site and looked at the casting information.

:cardie:

I got his autograph at VegasCon and did not even know his character's real name. Even worse, I've defended him and his acting on this forum. I don't know what to think of myself. I claim to like the character and all this time I had the name wrong! :brickwall:

One thing I noticed recently after watching "E2" is the way they even made the deflector flicker on the 'old' Enterprise, and how phasers were TOS blue instead of red. Just little things I never really caught before, course last time I saw E2 it was on live.

I noticed how Hoshi had not a lot of lines, I always thought she had more than she really did

When developing the character Trinneer was told the character was from the south. They settled on a northern Arkansas accent for a bit of drawl without being too southern. For the Xindi arc they decided that he would be from Florida and his family would be affected by the test weapon. Connor reminded them that he was cast as a country boy from the South and spoke with a southern accent, not a Florida accent. The reply from management was "the public will not notice." Of course, if you are from Florida or if you are from the south and visit Florida you do notice.

Ummm... maybe I'm a nut, but I know several people from Florida and parts have a very distinct Southern accent reminiscent of Georgia or Alabama. My instructor from work flew out from Ft Lauderdale and I thought her accent was from West Virginia it was so southern. So, I don't think it can be expected that everyone in Florida lacks an accent or sounds like the cast from CSI:Miami... especially in the "panhandle".

But I thought he was established as a Floridian in the first season episode "Fusion." That is indeed in the panhandle and the accent suits it fine.

I watched that night before last and then watched the commentary version last night. I don't remember seeing anything that established him as being from Florida. Give me some time and I will try to find the interview where Connor talks about the accent and that he could do a Florida accent if they had told him the character was from Florida before they had already filmed episodes. You could tell he was a bit upset with the comment from management that the public would not notice.

It was this line I was thinking of:

TUCKER: I remember the first dance I ever went to. Bayshore Elementary, Panama City, Florida. A girl I had a crush on, Melissa Lyles, was going to be there. So I spent weeks practicing the two-step with my brother. I wanted to make sure I was ready. She was wearing a red dress that night. Prettiest girl there. All I wanted to do was ask her to dance with me, but I never worked up the courage to go over and talk to her. I caught her looking at me a couple times, but I ended up just standing in a corner with my buddies.
It doesn't definitively establish that he was born there or anything, but I can imagine it leaves him plenty of time to develop the accent.

As well he should be. However, the entry for Spike Tucker in the series bible mentions his extensive diving in the Florida Keys, and doesn't get any more specific than "southerner" aside from that. I don't think Trinneer should have been too surprised that the character would turn out Floridian.

I always assumed the accent came from him maybe travelling around. Its not too hard to pick up an accent and have it stick. Heck I was in Memphis for a three day conference and when I got home I was talking with a Memphis accent for at least a few days before I conciously tried to eradicate it from my speech pattern.

Besides, who knows what accent his mother or father had. Just because he lived in Florida doesn't mean that he didn't live around other southerners with his accent. I know enough people up here in Wisconsin that talk like they lived in the deep south and were born and raised up here. And Wisconsin sort of has that lack of accent thing going on (other than dat dere Yooper accent from dem folks up in da Upper Penensulah. Or YooPee. Don'cha know. - and yeah that's kinda an over blown accent ontop of it all, not something the average folk would talk with)

Course even different regions in the 22ND CENTURY may have had people moving around. By the time the 22nd Century moved along, maybe people from other southern states started moving into Florida after all the old folks died off and the Cubans went back to Cuba, and weather control systems didn't make Florida a forsaken land during Hurricane season. So its entirely possible that the Florida accent of TODAY would be different from the Florida accent of TOMORROW.

We're lucky he didn't say 'I like Catfish... and Mojitos! With a side of Pico DeGallo!"

Yeah that is pretty bad..

(LOL)

I'm on my third viewing all the way through and I couldn't begin to list all the things I've noticed. I just started a thread about one of them. One thing that bothers me is how much T'Pol twitches, her face. How often she looks from side to side before speaking. It just adds to my T'Pol is a very messed up Vulcan theory (don't get me wrong, T'Pol is one of my favorite characters).

I have probably noticed this in past viewings but it seems I always appreciate it: the music is extremely good for a lot of Enterprise.

Velton Ray Bunch won the Emmy for his "Similitude" score. :) I liked his score for "Home" as well.

I enjoyed the music for the show very much. Emotional and evocative.

This is a very promising theory. I think many viewers were a bit distracted by the va-va-voom factor and missed some of the weird nuances in the performance; the more attention I pay to them, the more I think that T'Pol is just sort of odd, even or especially for a Vulcan. Sometimes I watch her when she isn't front and center and someone else is delivering dialogue and there's a lot of stuff going on. There was a near-eyeroll at Hoshi once from the background that I only noticed in HD. The eyes went up about 2/3 of the way. I've forgotten the episode :(

My parents are from East Tennessee, my dad sounds like McCoy while my mom has a more of a Tennessee accent.

I noticed that Travis didn't start getting the short shift until Season Three.

For some reason I thought it was like that from the beginning. Actually, he's featured pretty prominently throughout Seasons One and Two.

I liked the music from Similtude Home and the Vulcan arc and other shows from the different sesons. I liked the mcgyver like music they had for Trip in Terra Prime. I wish the music from the series would be released on a cd like the other series did.

I agree T'pol sometimes is a bit of a strange vulcan. I believe they once said that if season 5 would've been made, they were going to reveal that her father was a romulan spy, which would certainly explain this.
