Things you buy only at Crimbo

ok Salty,

Twiglets are short stick like, crunchy and nobbly snack things, flavoured like marmite. Not sure what they're made from, like french fries or something.

Bombay mix I'm not exactly sure because there are various similar things and I don't know the difference. Basically they are pea sized snacks savoury snacks, they're baked, often with salted herb and spice flavouring. Some of them are glazed and taste weird like pretzels. I'm no expert on these.

Crimbo is a colloquial contraction of 'christmas'. It's usage isn't even given second thought in England.

'Quality Street' is a brand name. They make chocolates. At xmas time they sell them in large round tins, around 1 kilo, used to be more like 3 kilos when I was little. They are colourful foil and plastic wrapped. Same designs for the past 100 years or so. About 10 designs now, was about 30 when I was little. They're a traditional family favourite for xmas.

Celebrations are a modern competitor to the quality street offerings, which started only in the mid 1990s I think. They make chocolate sized miniatures of popular full-size chocolate bars.

Sounds like it. I was really hoping twiglet was some weird European word for pretzel, and that Bombay mix was some bastardized version of Chex Mix.

Pringles. We only ever eat them at Christmas. I have no idea why, everyone likes them.

Tradition? It's on the christmas shopping list between the sprouts and the paxo.

My dad always eats fish on Good Friday, but he's an atheist, so it has no significance. So why? His answer: Because he always has. He doesn't even like fish all that much. wtf?!

Personally, I can take them or leave them. It's my sister that likes them. I don't snack, I like to eat regular meals and that's it.

I also wonder why we always have to have all the fuss about putting the vegetables in separate bowls all over the table. I just want a plate with my food on it! :klingon:

If I was served fish on Good Friday, I'd phone Dominos.

For our house, they're pretty much a regular thing:)

Christmas wise only? - For our household it's Quality Street/Roses/Celebrations etc. Mince Pies and Baileys Irish Cream

Street chocolates still sounds like something that would end with someone getting stabbed.
The sad thing is that in the near future, I predict "Quality Street" will be rebranded for the "hip" and "cool" customer and be simply renamed "Street". Eventually it'll become part of the local Chav lingo: "Ey mate, iz da' like real Stree' chocs? Quali'ty, bruv! :bolian:" or something...

I don't like twiglets or bombay mix. It's all bird cage sweepings to me. :p
But it's the type of bird cage sweepings that goes down well at parties. :bolian:

This year, each of us has decided to bring a party snack for the family Crimbo "pot". Me, I'm bringing a selection of biscuits. But they're not just biscuits... they're "Your M&S" biscuits, hand-made from dreamy cookie dough and lightly whipped chocolate truffle and lovingly laced with early morning honey drawn from the finest quality apiaries of Luxembourg or someplace. :D

And to you, merry Crimbo, Jadzia. :)

Most the stuff I get at xmas week I have all year round anyway. There are some exceptions, but nothing springs to mind.

I also make my own christmas cake. Just a small one, because it is all for me :)

Being vegan, I don't get to share in many of the treats. I do bake myself some nice cakes and pastries, but I do that all year round anyway :)

If I'm out with my sis at the grocery store, we always end up with a box of those white fudge oreos. It's really more for New Year's, actually.
