Things that you couldn't believe YOU didn't know

My sister's a senior pharmacist but she doesn't understand imperial volume because it was never taught at school. Pints and gallons are a mystery to her.

I was taught these measures early in elementary school, but I almost never used them, so it still takes me a minute to figure them out.

A gallon = milk
A pint = beer

That's what I know!

It doesn't help that US pints and gallons are different. Thank goodness for the metric system.

Are they?

This is something I didn't know. Please elaborate.

A US fluid ounce is about 4% larger than an Imperial fluid ounce. There are 16 US fluid ounces in a US pint, and 20 Imperial fluid ounces in an Imperial pint. The result is that a US gallon (the liquid one; a US dry gallon is different again) is about 3.79 litres, and an Imperial gallon is about 4.55 litres (16% bigger than a US gallon).

A lot of Yanks are bewildered by the metric system, even though it's completely logical and so much simpler than the imperial system (or our American version of it).

Until quite recently, I never knew that Raymond Burr was gay -- and that Neil Sedaka isn't! ;)

^^Oh dear, i see i made a slight grammatical error in the initial post, i of course meant inches in a feet, i can only grovel in apologetic embarrassment and state i was trying to cook at the same time and had set the smoke alarm off.

I of course will sit in the corner and accept all incoming ridicule and catch it in my much deserved dunces hat.

That according to the highway code if you are travelling up or down a hill and a vehicle approaches you, the vehicle coming up hill has right of way. - Just to clarify things, I do not drive and was informed this a few days ago while in my friends car and he gave way while travelling down hill.

Heh. Don't worry about it. I think I knew what you were trying to say. :)

To be honest, I had to use a calculator to work out how many feet there were in an inch - which is a bit of a shame for me, as I work with people who regularly divide 1 by 12 on a near-daily basis.

I'm assuming this is a one-lane road? Otherwise it wouldn't matter. The cars would just pass each other.

Do we even have one-lane roads in America anymore?

well it was along a two lane road, but one side had parked cars.

Everything about the internal combustion engine, judging from my OH's expression every time I ask him something. Oh and electricity for the same reason.

Most cars nowadays seem to have so much electronics controlling their operation that there's precious little you need to know or can do apart from how to check and top up the various fluids, check and adjust the tyre pressures, have the car serviced once a year, and call the breakdown service.
That is not true.

Sure. Dirt roads in the mountains are typically about 1.5 lanes wide, without any markings. You drive sort of to the right, but passing someone can still be more comfortable if you slow down.

That there are little white lights on the back of a car and they signal when it's in reverse.

Seriously, I got to age 26 before noticing that.

That a water fountain requires a powered pump to work.

Seriously, I went up to my manager perplexed that our fountain wasn't working, only to be shown that there was a plug and that it simply needed to be plugged in. I had NO idea that's how water fountains worked until that moment! That was embarrassing...

Makes sense when you think about it, but I didn't know that. Guess it's way too long since I've glanced at the Highway code:)

Until Sunday i did not know the General Belgrano was the USS Phoenix.

I was thinking of that earlier as I saw it on iplayer over the weekend - QI possibly?

I knew it originally was an American warship though, just not the name, nor that it "survived" Pearl Harbour.
