Things that frustrate us all

All these stupid AI "assistance" things that I never asked for, now popping up in software that I've been using for ages.

I hate it when programs are "updated" automatically. In fact, they should start numbering these "upgrades" in negative numbers because the next version is usually worse.

It's kind of like a mechanic breaking into your car in the middle of the night to give it an unwanted upgrade, forcing you to call the dealership the next morning when your car doesn't start.

What's worse is Adobe Acrobat auto download of an update that also puts Adobe Acrobat back in the start menu, then forced a machine restart because of the start menu change. What was the update, that I had to shut down, then take Adobe Acrobat back out of the start menu, then restart again? An AI assistant that I didn't want, that takes up the right part of the screen with its nonsense, that I have to close every time I open a PDF file to read using Adobe.

Word. Same goes with trying to pay a bill. Damn bots doing the work and making things a hassle.

Try filling out job applications these days. "Just download your resume and it will automatically fill out the form." Yeah, and it auto-fills half of it incorrectly ("Age: female") so you then have to go back and just type in by hand anyway.

As a fellow person with autism whose also going to need accommodations for going back to school, I can say this: you are not stupid. Take me, I'm going ask for help with math and ICT because haven't had math or worked with an Excel document since high school. I'll need the refresher course, and also probably noice canceling headphones. There will be at least 16 students besides me, I am going to need those headphones.

Good luck.

But I warn you though: Be careful about revealing your autism if you're employed. Despite what the laws in most countries say in that people with disabilities like autism have to be accommodated, some employers can be total jackasses and find ways around the laws.

We had a 2019 Honda CR-V towed in with a flat tire.

The Honda comes with a spare tire/donut in the storage area behind the second row.

How fucking lazy do you have to be to not want to take the flat off and put the spare on?

Barring that, calling Triple AAA or roadside assistance to dispatch someone to come out and do it?

I can count on one and a half hands the number of times I've had to put a spare tire on a vehicle, either my own or a company one.

I've even had to do it on a Ford Sprinter van on the shoulder of northbound I-5 with traffic going by at 65-70 mph.

Not fun.

My Mustang came with a useless tire inflation kit. I bought a full size wheel from Ford, for about the price they charge for a donut spare, got a matching z rated tire and TPM sensor and had a full size spare. Within 30 miles, of getting the 4 new tires, I had to use the full size spare, because I hit a piece of rebar in a narrow lane construction zone that punctured the side wall. I have AAA, but it takes more time for them to arrive than it does for me to put on the spare and reprogram the TPMS. I also carry a Harbor Freight Tools aluminum racing jack and torque wrench in the space that used to house the tire inflation kit. It takes Costco from 2 days to a week to get me another tire. At least the replacement was covered under a pro rata warranty, and I could still use my car without having to wait until it arrived. $5 for a twenty inch $400 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 A/S tire.

Possibly screwed myself out of $200 because I didn’t see the seller’s preorder policy of no refunds in time.

With the international shipping situation to the US a total clusterfuck right now, I wanted to go with a local US import store that sells international discs for a preorder of some movies from my favorite seller from Australia, Imprint Films. Stupidly, I forgot the tariff situation may impact the shipping of my items and went ahead with my order anyway.

Now that I’m trying to email their customer service to cancel the preorder… I finally checked their policy, only to realize they don’t offer cancellations except in “extreme circumstances.” I doubt “international shipping clusterfuck” will qualify as a reason…

Go call Customer Service, give it a shot.

Tell them you forgot about the Tariffs or figure out some other excuse.

It never hurts to try.

I haven't used Adobe Acrobat in ages.

I swapped to Foxit Reader long time ago, never looked back.

Maybe I'm not understanding the situation correctly, but it sounds like your order was placed with a US importer? So if it ends up that the discs can't be imported to the US from Australia... isn't that on the importer? If they can't actually source the items you paid for, won't they be required to refund you? Sorry, maybe I'm not getting it, but I'm not sure why you would be out $200 in this situation?

I don't know, sounds pretty "extreme" to me... ;)

Seriously, though, I feel your pain. It's not that often, mainly due to financial constraints, but I do sometimes import things from Australia too. At the end of the year last year when Canada Post went on strike, Australia Post stopped accepting shipments bound here. Whereas local companies just switched to couriers, but I could see how that would be a significant price difference when shipping from Australia, so places just stopped accepting orders from Canada. And even when the strike was over, I think it took an additional three weeks before Australia Post began shipping to Canada again, so there was a fairly long stretch where I was unable to order anything.

I hope your situation gets resolved to your satisfaction. Good luck.

Probably they have the merchandise, but tariffs kicked in for imports (de minimis exemption) to the United States, that used to be exempt. The tariff is paid by the purchaser in the United States starting August 29.
