Things that frustrate us all

The company I work for is a model of inefficiency--which is odd, since all the work is done online. You'd think that would be easy, but....no. We are supposed to log in at start-time, read the materials, look at examples of each level of said materials, pass a short quiz and then proceed to work. If you don't pass the quiz, you can't proceed to work. The system won't allow it.

So, the geniuses at corporate decide to update the whole system and how users access it. Good idea--the software is a good 10-15 years out of date. They decide to do all of this not only when the majority of people are working (the weekend) but also on the only day when NO ONE is at the home office---SUNDAY. They didn't do a test run of said upgrade, as nothing is working. I reached out to my team supervisor for the day and she can't even get past the start page. I was able to get in and reach the material but it won't let me submit scores, so I'm stuck on the first quiz example. My supervisor says there's no one in corporate to answer the phones, and the tech support line has a wait time of up to two hours. There must be 40/50 people all trying to call in to get help from two poor saps who probably have no idea what the hell has happened.

Fuck it. I'll just sit here until I hear otherwise. I get paid either way.

So far, it's been an hour and half. Still waiting. Good thing I get paid by the hour.

That happened at my last job. They updated the inventory check in system over the weekend without bothering to tell anyone. Come Monday morning and you're trying to check in freight and the new software is incompatible with the old operating system. Every store had the same problem. Lost three days while corporate tried remote fixing from their end. It was one of those, "Did anyone think to do a Beta test first before installing it?" situations that left everyone frustrated because you had to either accept the freight without checking it in, or print off a manifest and do it by hand. Either way, it was a tedious process and left the inventory count off.

I finally got it to work! Corporate sent an email several months ago saying the program HAD to be run in Chrome. Otherwise, it would not work.

After waiting for ages for someone to get to get back to me on this latest "update", I thought, "I wonder if it will work in Firefox?"

It does. Been scoring away since then. My supervisor, however, still can't get it to work in ANY browser.

At least I have something to do now.

New neighbor is parking in the fire lane that's clearly marked no parking. Might have to call the HOA on this one. Garbage truck isn't going to be able to get through if they continue to park on the street.

It happened again! I saw a jaywalker run across one lane -- the direction with no vehicles coming -- and then slow down to a casual stroll to cross the lane that had vehicles coming.

*shudders* I do not miss inventory. I also recall my last Black Friday before changing careers when they released the new chip credit card system without stress testing the system first. Suffice to say, that amount of shoppers using a new system caused multiple crashes and outages of authorizations for credit card sales.

In other news, I was driving to work with a truck in front of me with holographic stickers. Now, I'm sure they are fun but in the morning sun they constantly flashed red looking like brake lights coming on. So, I would slow down only for it to shift and the sticker to change color to blue...sighs. Long commute.

Fuck me running. PEOPLE, "Firstable" is not a word.

Alternate way of saying "First of all" used by some non-native English speakers and adapted as internet speak by the youths.
Wiktionary (not exactly an authoritative reference, I know) attributes it to non-native speakers whose own language lacks the b/v distinction. That's understandable. I have relatives who struggle with the V sound for that reason. "Vee" becomes "bwee," for instance.

For more formal academic stuff, it seems like spellcheck should catch it. I just tried in Word, and it suggested "First able," "Firs table," or "Fir stable." Maybe it is becoming a frequent enough error that "first of all" should be added as a suggestion. Other errors based on mishearing are already included. For example, if you enter "for all intensive purposes," it flags it for grammar and suggests "intents and" to replace "intensive."

F*ckin' campaign ads. I am so sick and tired of them. Not only on tv and the radio, but now they're interrupting my YouTube and Paramount+ streaming services.

I'm getting campaign texts, and they're only coming from two people that are competing against each other.

They should just ban "astroturfing" and be done with it. Require all campaign ads to say exactly who is funding them.

No more sock puppets, front groups, or 'dark money'. Just absolute transparency.

All secrets are lies.

Spellcheck should do that for all eggcorns!
