Things that frustrate us all

Ok, here's the full tweet:

Don’t get me wrong, my heart bleeds for what Texans are going through right now but the mean girl in me says you get the government you deserve and they have voted Republican, across the board, for the last 20 years.

Yeah, that's a dumb thing to say, but I think she was referencing the infrastructural problems with the electrical grid that came from the cost cutting leadership. Not saying that voting for the wrong party makes you deserve to suffer. She was saying, the weather may not be preventable but a lot of the suffering it caused is, and they chose the government that would rather cut taxes than address the infrastructure problems.

It was still in the most supremely bad taste.

Ironic, really...she played an empath on TV, but she seems to have little empathy herself.

Marina Sirtis just said that people in Texas deserve to suffer because they vote Republican. :(

FUCK THAT SHIT
Just out of curiosity, how many more threads can we expect you to spread your hyperbolic misrepresentation of what Ms. Sirtis said (despite you being corrected on it each time) today? I count three times so far (NextGen, Adm's Lounge, and Misc.). You can find her comments in poor taste without exaggerating or being misleading about what she said, or you can even acknowledge the nugget of truth in an otherwise tone deaf comment instead of just trying to take offense and dismiss it entirely.

People on the Right have been making similar statements about California for years. Ted Cruz's statements are now coming back to bite him.

The crux of her comments is there is a long term price to pay for short term gains (i.e. lower taxes). We're seeing that play out now throughout the country as health departments are struggling after decades of budget cuts. It is the failure to plan for that rainy day or save for the future.

Sirtis certainly chose extremely poor phrasing for what she said, because it is easy to conclude based on a quick read that she was saying "Anyone who votes republican deserves to suffer". Under further scrutiny in context, it's clear it's not what she meant. But she could have phrased it much more clearly, to say "This is what comes from governance from a republican party that's been cutting costs on infrastructure for decades This could have been prevented by better leadership".

The notion that some people have more rights than other people.

"No being is so important that he can usurp the rights of another!" - Jean Luc Picard

In my opinion you take the quote in too narrow a context, JP. What Picard expressed there is the cornerstone of all social systems, from insects to humans: the rights of one person/being end exactly at the point where the next person's/being's rights begin. All rights without exception. We don't want an Orwell-ish society in which all are equal but some are more equal than others.

Which leads me to my frustration of the day: I found the remnants of a binge party on the ice of a nearby lake. Plenty of beakers and bottles for the police to take DNA-samples from, and plenty of shards and trash in which water birds got entangled and injured. I caught 2 ducks and a very rare merganser who all three had cut feet. :( If people think they can't live without boozing, why the bloody :censored:can't they tidy up their mess?!! :scream:

The notion that some people have more rights than other people.

Who is suggesting this notion and how significant in size/power are their movement? Are we talking one person on Twitter or a national organization or group of politicians with some actual political clout?

What rights have they denied you or others?

What additional rights have they given themselves that you or others do not have?

Is this something that has already happened or is it a paranoid hypothetical like predicting every Democratic President is going to seize all privately owned firearms despite that never happening?

Being vague invites questions.

And I'm being vague... how? I think the sentiment is crystal clear.

There is vagueness in your post around whether this thought frustrates you as a hypothetical, or whether it frustrates you because you believe it is actually happening. I could post that "the notion that unicorns are sneaking into my house at night and eating all my Oreos" frustrates me, but that doesn't mean that it is actually happening, nor even that I believe it is happening.

All too often, people bemoaning that others are getting "special" or "extra" rights are those in groups that have been historically privileged in society, and are complaining because historically disadvantaged groups are starting to achieve equal rights. For the privileged group, they can sometimes feel like their rights are being "taken away" in favour of the other groups, even though this is unequivocally not the case.

Of course, I don't know if that's how you meant it, because, as Locutus pointed out, your post is vague. But perhaps you can see how it could be read like that, which in turn could be frustrating to many of us.

And I'm being vague... how? I think the sentiment is crystal clear.
Well, you quoted a situation where the fundamental rights of a sapient being to exist and have agency over their own body was being denied, which suggests you were talking about something pretty important.

I was curious what rights of yours were being denied?

You get how forums work, right? You say something. Other people respond. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I was a moderator in another forum for six years. And in that time, I dealt with frequent spam posting, an occasional porn posting, lots of bad language, and some persistent trolling. But I never imposed any religious, political, or philosophical norms. We had people everywhere on the religious spectrum from creationists to militant atheists, and everywhere politically from socialism to the "from my cold dead hands" crowd. And though I was the second most powerful person on the site, I never targeted anyone for their beliefs, even if they disagreed with mine. And I can tell you that those things happen here. There is a party line, and if you admit to a position anywhere else, you get locked out of the topic by the moderators.

So if you wonder why I choose to be vague, I suppose you have your answer.

Yeah, so no actual rights have been restricted. You're just sulking and playing the victim again. Thanks for clarifying.
