That is frustrating. Maybe they only had 2 twenties?
When I was in college I had a job delivering pianos. The first delivery I had I made a $10 tip. Except for a soda here or there, that was the only tip I got in 3 years of delivering pianos.

Probably, but I could pick up a new phone that's equivalent to the old one for less than a tenner (It's an old 3310) and I'm only trying it because the company it's with have asked if I ever actually plan on using it again
Oh dear, that's just awful! I'm so sorry you have to rely on tips from people like that ...
One time in Canada, my family went out for dinner at this restaurant, and my mother left a tip of a $2 coin (called a "toonie") Well our waitress came running outside and threw it at her, she was so offended.
Leaving a big tip when ordering at a cafe and then finding out that you are expected to bus your own table.

Aww man. I don’t think I’d ever do that, but it does hurt when you go out of your way to help a difficult customer and they don’t feel you deserve to be compensated for it.
Bars and restaurants are a luxury. If you can’t afford to tip, you shouldn’t indulge in that luxury.
Tipping is mandatory here. In fact, the bill includes the tip which is a percentage that's legal and therefore the same everywhere. Some people leave a supplemental tip but most people don't.
I believe VAT is also added to the bill separately too in the US. Everything is included in the advertised price over here.

But the tip is not a tax here. It's something that must be given to the person who waited the table. That's the law.
There's also a tax but it's a completely different issue.
Tipping is not required by law in the US--at least not in most states, as far as I know. Tipping is encouraged and generally expected for most service jobs that go beyond mere counter-service, but how much you tip is up to the consumer. Certain businesses have a tip included in the price of special services--say, for instance, if you got a restaurant with a very large group, they might add the tip to the bill, as a service charge, but those terms are always stated on a sign on the door or menu. Each state has its own sales tax (or none at all), so the price of an item or service is posted but not the additional sales tax. The minimum sales tax in Texas is 6.25% with a maximum of 8.25%--it can vary from one town to another (so, yeah, in most places in Texas, it's 8.25%).
Unfortunately, Canadians are apparently notoriously bad tippers, especially compared to Americans. I read an article recently where they interviewed wait staff in a border town, and they all hated having to wait on Canadian tourists because of this.
I always try to tip well. I’ve even on occasion snuck back to the table and added more when someone else picked up the bill and didn’t leave what I considered a fair tip. I just figure if I can afford to eat out (which, admittedly is almost never), then I can afford to leave a good tip too.
In my own defense, I try to be as good as I can at tipping.
