Things that frustrate us all

I'm so sorry, {{{{{{{Gary}}}}}}}. I feel with you and your family :(

cool! I've never seen one as far as I can remember. Are they something new? Last time I was in the UK was almost a decade ago. Time passes so terribly fast nowadays.

Quincemeat is an ancient and delicious treat - basically it's like fruit leather, only thicker and juicier: you rub the fluffy hairs off ripe quinces, cut them into pieces, with skin and core, cook them with very little water and then drive them through a sieve.
This quince mash is then mixed with sugar at equal parts (if you like, you can also add a little lemon or orange peel and cinnamon or cardamom and/or a dollop of whiskey or brandy) and cooked until it's rather tough. You have to stir it all the time as it chars within seconds. When it's cooked to a stiff paste, you spread it 1/5-1/4 inch thick onto a wet baking tray or a wet plate and leave it to dry till it's leathery. (the plate or tray ought to be wet to prevent the jelly from sticking. grease-proof baking paper also works nicely.) Then you cut it into any shapes you like (I use small cookie cutters), roll the pieces in sugar and store them in an airtight container. They keep for over a year. My uncle is very fond of them so that I make them every year.

My father died yesterday. Thank you all for your well-wishes. They may have helped him hold on a bit longer. He almost died on the 22nd which was my mother's birthday, Thanksgiving and the anniversary of when my dad proposed to my mom.

Doctors are sometimes very frustrating.

My deepest condolences!

double argh today - I seem to have finally gotten rid of one stalker and have promptly required another. He's an ex-schoolmate who thinks he can continue his bullying where he left off, 35 years ago. Only now I have excellent professional contacts to the cops and a friend of mine happens to be the district attorney. In a few days it's bye bye, bully  (I love using Bonzie's trademark smilie :D)
Far be it from me to complain about my apparently irresistable attraction for all sorts of men but it'd be nice if I'd get the right sort for a change. 50ish, dark-eyed, pacifist nonsmoker and teatotaller of my dreams, where are you?
oh - there he is .. err was... will be... will have been - darned time travel!

Got into an argument with a guy at my workplace. I hate to pull rank and some people seem to mistake that for laisser-faire. Well, I hope he's learned his lesson... If not I am more than ready for more pedagogy.

TD bank charged me $280 in overdraft fees this week. I called and asked if they could remove some of them, being that it’s the holidays, they said no.

Joining a credit union ASAP.

Wow, I just saw this.... very sorry, Gary. My condolences. :(

Ever reply to a post and not realize until the next person points it out the post was from eight years ago?

I successfully challenged some overdraft fees in college because I had a checking account where they displayed the balance $100 higher than it really was including the reserve and I didn't get the notification until I got back from winter break.

They must have had a policy to always remove them if asked to because they *know* they're doing something wrong exploiting college kids' lack of ability to manage their money by displaying the balance higher than it really is.

^that's why I always note down all my expenses. This way I know at every moment how much money I have left. It was hard to emerge from my student loan debts and I don't ever want to go there again.
The interests the banks demand for overdrawn accounts are outrageous and border robbery, considering that the banks themselves get the money for literally zero from the larger banks at the current low-interest-period.

And yes, I have been an accidential thread necromancer myself, a few times.

Wow, that's steep!
I'd say it approaches the vertical!

^ I always assumed it was an owl,

Today’s frustration. Not having the correct Lego pieces, or not in the right colours, to rebuild the sets of one’s youth. I sense another rudimentary obsession is about to blossom.
