I had to renew a parking permit via a state office. I filled out the form but found that I couldn’t scan and fax or email it. Had to send it to a P.O. Box, or go to one of five offices, spread out inaccessibly in our city. Figured I’d use the mail option.
I had to locate an envelope: I hadn’t mailed a letter in years. I found a couple of old ones in a desk drawer.
I had to get a stamp. my wife handles these. She says that they’re “Forever” stamps, but I’m skeptical. I’ll bet that due to inflation, the rate must be Forever + 50 cents by now. We’ll see.
I wasn’t about to print the address by hand. Again, I haven’t had to takes notes or write by hand except on rare occasions lately, and if the post office people couldn’t read it, that wouldn’t be good. So, I typed the address into a computer file. It looked good.
I was about to take a chance and try to get the computer-connected printer to print on an envelope, but found that my envelope was too wide to be placed in the tray. I guess that you’d have to rotate the image somehow and feed it through the long way, and that was a bit too much to orchestrate. So, I printed the address on plain paper, or rather I tried to. It only printed partial lines, although the diagnostic routine said that the black cartridge was okay. Several ink-head maintenance options didn’t help. As a last resort, I went into the word-processor file with the address, and changed the color from default (black) to dark blue. This time, it printed something readable.
Next, I had to scare up some scissors, and try to trim out the vital part as neatly as I could. I couldn’t find any suitable glue or paste, but did have transparent tape, so I used this to attach the paper label on four sides. I kept clear of the upper right corner of the envelope, as the postal people don’t like it if they can’t cancel the stamp.
I didn’t trust the old glue on the envelope, so I used tape here as well to seal it. The stamp seemed to stick on its own, so I’ll hope.
That was enough work for today. I plan to take it to the post office tomorrow. No way would I leave it in a box for pickup.
Welcome to the future!
(Don’t bother to tell me: I’m aware that there are bigger problems out there! )
