Things I Noticed While Watching 20 Minutes of JJ Abrams’ Star Trek

I'll get to the bottom...

Bottom line: I was extremely impressed with most of the footage, but I find myself a little skeptical of the use of broad comedy and sight gags. Either way, I have a feeling that mainstream audiences will probably dig it. I’m also pretty confident that the hardcore Trekkies won’t care for this movie. It is clearly a much different type of film than the franchise has ever given us before. But truth is, it might also be a much better film than they have ever gotten before. And most certainly, the most accessible Star Trek film to date. If I had to compare the footage I screened to any other film, I would say that it has shades of the better moments from Return of The Jedi mixed with new generation Battlestar Galactica.

Take for what it's worth. I still am looking foward to it. It's a film for my entertainment. Oh, and sorry if this is a repost.

I love Jedi AND nuBSG.

And when I read "hardcore Trekkie," I immediately think "crazy nerd who lives in their parents' basement," so I'm not too worried if they don't like it.

I don't know if this film will be good yet or not, but I have the feeling that IF this is hugely popular with the general movie-going public, many hardcore fans will point to that fact as the reason they hate this film.

Like this:
Hardcore fan: "Abramstrek is hugely popular with average movie-goers. Average movie-goers have horrible taste in movies, thus this film sucks"

I think that even if some of these hardcore fans actually enjoyed themselves a bit while watching the film, they would never admit it to themselves (let alone admit it to others) that they enjoyed a Star Trek film that is popular with the masses.

I can see a lot of them also going, "Yeah, it was a good movie, but it wasn't a Star Trek movie!"

Yes, because all people who don't like this movie are "hardcore Trekkies" who live in their parents' basement.

You know, if George Lucas was directing this movie but EVERYTHING ELSE WAS THE SAME, all the spoilers, the reports, the trailer, EVERYTHING...then I bet people would be saying that the movie would suck. Yet because it's JJ Abraham who wrote an episode of Lost five years ago everyone says it's going to rule shit.

I think most people would actually say, "This movie is still 6 months away, so I'm not going to dismiss it and say it's going to suck quite yet just because of a few spoilers."

Abrams is making Lost, and he made Cloverfield, both of which I enjoy. I honestly don't know the last thing that George Lucas made that I liked.

Well, since they specified the better parts of Jedi (because most of Jedi is awfulness incarnate) mixed with nuBSG - that's rather intriguing. Though I'm not sure how either mixes with broad humor and sight gags. But Trek has always had super cheesy humor, and TOS was probably the worst offender when it comes to humor.

Return of The Jedi mixed with Battlestar Galactica? That's bizarre, and cries out for elaboration. Did he just pick two items at random? He might as well have said it's like Anchorman mixed with The Color of Money...

It's a bias that the hardcore geeks have against the regular stiffs.

Geeks get very protective about their geekdom because they are so used to being outcasts and excluded from "what the cool kids do" they need to cling to something and Trek (and other scifi/fantasy fandom) is their domain. They tend to get very arrogant about it and look down on those who aren't Trek fans but although they don't know anything about it, are curious and show an interest. When they this they are guilty of the very thing that's been done to them their whole lives.

I remember back when I was a year out of high school and was more interested in partying and girls and had only a passing interest in Trek I wound up at the house of buddy of mine who had a bunch of friends (who were friends of mine in high school, too) from the A/V club and they had just seen GEN and I asked them, "So, does Kirk get killed?" and they just rolled their eyes at me and they were very condescending about my lack of Trek knowledge and treated me like an outcast... which I thought was really odd. I mean, after all, these guys were in the flippin' A/V club.

How dare Star Trek be accessible to everyone including non-Geeks?!

Maybe he means: awesome battle scenes and great VFX mixed with really good character-acting.

Then again he could mean lots of shaky cam mixed with daddy angst. Hard to say, you know?
