They should have made Nidell/Fenna Sisko's long-term gf, not Kasidy

Just re-watched Second Sight. Before watching it, I couldn't remember why I had no recollection of ever having seen it before. Then once I had re-watched the whole episode, I realized I must have entirely purged all records of ever having seen it from my brain because it is a completely useless throwaway episode with no story or entertainment value whatsoever.

One thing I did notice about it though is that the Nidell/Fenna actress is a whole heckuva a lot more attractive than the Kasidy actress. I have read that when they were looking to cast Kasidy they were determined that she must be attractive, so much so that Sisko would go for her, but I do not believe the actress chosen to play her lives up to that description by a longshot.

On the other hand, Nidell/Fenna looks attractive enough to actually be with Sisko. It's a shame they squandered the Nidell/Fenna thing instead of letting her fulfill the Kasidy role in the series.

Fenna wasn't a terribly intersting or charismatic character. I'm a heck of a lot happier that we got Kasidy instead.

Agreed. And I'll add that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and Fenna certainly didn't catch my attention in that way.

I say Fenna is much more charismatic than Kasidy. True, Fenna wasn't terribly interesting, but neither was Kasidy. They could have developed Fenna into an interesting character, though. That never even happened with Kasidy, despite her having multiple episodes.

I must again disagree. I liked her character and thought she brought something to the show when she had scenes with Sisko. And frankly, I'm glad Fenna never showed up again. She was very bland.

First off, they'd have to recast the role, as Salli Richardson is more a movie than TV actress. I do think Fenna/Salli is gorgeous, but Penny Johnson, who played Cassidy, ain't too bad, either. She also played Sherri Palmer, President Palmer's scheming wife, in 24. -- RR

No! Kasidy was awesome!

Another voice in support of Kasidy. She wasn't supermodel beautiful but she was still attractive.

I do wish they had mirror Jennifer more, maybe even strand her in the primary universe for a few episodes. That could have been interesting to see.

I’d have liked to see him end up with Mardah.

C***blocked by your own dad, that would have sucked for Jake.

While I reckon that Nidell/Fenna was more attractive that Kassidy, Kassidy was far more spunky and interesting. :)

Re: They should have made Nidell/Fenna Sisko's long-term gf, not Kasid

I liked Kassidy. Basically this was a very grounded, loving but stern woman who anchored Sisko's character very nicely. This was important because despite the aura of the Trek captaincy and the additional prestige of being the Emissary, Sisko is basically a family man, somebody who wants to build a home and spend a lot of time with his kids.

I thought Kassidy was a convincing match for him, and she looks good, but like an actual woman.

Overall I thought the DS9 women were a strength of the show, moreso than other Trek shows. Attractive as a group, but not babes that would do covers for Maxim. There is Leita of course, but she is fun almost as a caricuture of the mandatory hottie that graces (or plagues, depending on how you look at it) the cast so many sci-fi shows. Neither are they monotonous or bland, as Crusher and Troi tended to be.

DS9 showed that you could have strong, interesting female characters without either attempting to desexualize them, or put them in overtly sexual outfits as if they're trying to guide the audience: "Look! This one is a sex symbol!" (with the exception of mirror universe, holodeck fantasies and similar, where it was used almost as a fun parody of that kind of cliche treatment of female characters). They looked more natural and more convincing as officers as a result.

AMEN to what you say about the not excessively sexy uniforms. That was what I liked about Kira's earlier uniform, despite what some people say about it: it actually looked halfway convincing as a military uniform, suggesting you should take the character SERIOUSLY instead of it all being about sex.

I don't know if that's true. She seems to have done a lot of TV.

But she is 20 years younger than Avery Brooks...

Re: They should have made Nidell/Fenna Sisko's long-term gf, not Kasid

Salli Richardson is super gorgeous, but Fenna was more of a one-show type character. I do agree though with development she might've turned into a more credible long-term girlfriend and eventual wife for Sisko.

Kasidy might also not have gotten as much development as she deserved, but I think her character matched up better with Sisko. She was more real-world, more grounded, and she came across as more of a friend and partner. Fenna was too much a dream girl.

Also, Penny Johnson-Gerald is pretty nice looking IMO. I don't think Sisko lost any cool points with Kasidy as his girlfiriend/wife. She has such a cute button nose, and her turn as Sherry Palmer made her even sexier to me.

Re: They should have made Nidell/Fenna Sisko's long-term gf, not Kasid

I didn't really like the character, probably because telepathic species in Star Trek have never been done that well.

Re: They should have made Nidell/Fenna Sisko's long-term gf, not Kasid

I also didn't find Fenna a very dynamic character. If they had used her, she would never have been a strong character. Kassidy was much more interesting since she was a captain and more of an equal to Sisko.
