They DID NOT just destroy... [SPOILERS]

...Deep Space Nine! Are you freaking serious? They killed Janeway. Fine, whatever. They wiped out the Borg. Ugh, FINE. They create that stupid Typhon Pact. Whatever. But now, they've gone too far.

What the hell? DS9 has been practically ignored for the last few years, and in the first novels to finally feature it again, THEY DESTROY IT?! Trek Lit has been going downhill more and more lately, but I've held on and tried to get used to this new, Janeway-less, Borg-less, annoying Typhon Pact universe. If they don't bring it back (Empok Nor, "the last two books were nothing but a dream" Dallas-style, whatever. And a whole new starbase doesn't count.) then I'm done with Trek Lit. Screw that.

Excuse me now, I'm going to go cry in a corner. Curse you Pocket Books.

You might wanna post this under the 'Raise the Dawn' thread.

Haven't read the book myself, tho I expected this. I'm sorry if the destruction of Terok Nor is enough to make you stop reading, and you'll be missed.

*waves bye bye*

I wanted to post it here. My sadness and anger deserve their own thread. Sorry if that upsets you.

Yes, as I have my own special connection with Deep Space 9, it makes me upset. But you did read my post, right? Because this was just the last straw of things that I disliked about Trek Lit lately.

I'm a HUGE DS9 fan, and I'm really enjoying "Raise the Dawn." (Its direct predecessor was pretty damn awesome too!) Sure, the station will be missed, but all the great characters continue on. I welcome the start of this new phase in the DS9 saga. Keep it coming!!:bolian:

Agreed.

Couldn't have said it any better. I feel a common (and obvious) theme throughout the post-Destiny novels is the ability to move on. Some fans refuse to to that, however, and they end up missing out on some really well written stories.

DAMN IT! :scream:

I saw the title of the thread, and was not going to open it. But then my mouse hovered over the link (not thinking anything of it) and the pop-up / tooltip with the preview of the first post showed up, with the spoiler.

Not blaming anyone. But I'm behind on the books and was expecting to catch up over the summer. I still don't know *how* it happens, but... DAMN. That just sucks.

I will miss the station, but like a new Enterprise I will grow to love the new station. It is the characters of DS9 that I love and I think that David has done a marvelous job in these last 2 books with the cast of characters that we all love so much!

See, you say that, but I've read religiously before and after Destiny. And as well written as some of them are, I'm just not liking certain things in the stories. I absolutely love, however, the Voyager books since Kirsten Beyer took over. As well as the TNG relaunch. And despite Janeway's death, and the end of the Borg, and the Typhon Pact, I've still kept reading. But overall, I'm just not a fan of the whole Typhon Pact storyline. And, as I mentioned above, I really don't like that after basically ignoring DS9 for so long, they come back to it, to that beautiful creaky old station that I loved, finally, and now it's gone. There is such a thing as changing too much.

I will say this though. I've been reading Trek books for a LONG time. And my post above was based on my initial reaction to finding out that my favorite place in the Trek universe is now gone, so I'm sure that I'll still give whatever new DS9 they come up with a chance. It just won't be the same, but maybe I'll change my mind once I get into it.

To the OP: That's a bit of an overreaction. DS9 has hardly been neglected. Although the series hasn't had a sustained narrative presence since the publication of The Soul Key, DS9 characters have featured very prominently in Destiny, A Singular Destiny, three of the four original Typhon Pact novels, and Indistinguishable from Magic. There were also two DS9-related stories in the Seven Deadly Sins anthology.

Edit: The Typhon Pact isn't a storyline. It's a sociopolitical 'status quo' that has been interwoven into a number - but not all - of the post-Destiny novels.

FWIW, for a franchise that has "to boldly go where no one has gone before" as its motto, a lot of Trekkies are darn resistant to change.

Yeah Destiny, ASD and IfM had some DS9 characters, but they weren't set on DS9 or anything. As much as I enjoy the characters, to me, the station itself was almost a character as well. And I will admit I haven't read the Seven Deadly Sins Anthology yet. But I still haven't felt like I was getting my needed dose of DS9 itself.

I'll also say that I have enjoyed the Aventine-centered books, as well as Bashir's part in the Typhon Pact books. But again, while I love the characters, I still wanted some more of the station.

If you're going to quote me, you might want to check to see that what you are quoting is actually what ends up being posted.

Regardless, your "end of the world" post is a gross overreaction, as is the assertion that DS9 has been neglected since the publication of The Soul Key, which I've proven to be false as per my last post.

And I suggest you do the same. I edited my post as soon as I saw you did. =)

Chill brother. As your siggy says, we're all friendlies.

Edit: And furthermore, I, like you and everyone else, am entitled to my opinion and feelings on the matter, whether it's an overreaction or not. Sorry, but I take my Trek very seriously! :D

I bet some people felt the same way about two Enterprises being destroyed onscreen.

I love DS9 more than any other Trek, maybe more than all other Trek combined, but... well, she had a good run.

I wasn't trying to be confrontational. I was merely trying to let you know that what you quoted was not actually what I ended up posting.

From my perspective, the destruction of the existing physical DS9 station doesn't have any significant impact on things going forward because it is being replaced with another station - this one a custom-built Federation construct - which will bear the same name and be crewed by the same crew (save for one major change that I don't personally agree with but am willing to give DRGIII the benefit of the doubt on) as introduced in Plagues of Night.

It's cool man, just a misunderstanding over badly timed posts. And yeah, I figured it'd still be called Deep Space 9, but when I think DS9, I think of an old Cardassian mining facility with ugly brown colors and an infestation of voles. Call me old fashioned. Also, I'm a very visual person, so picturing a new station that I've never seen will just be hard for me. But overall, I loved DS9 just how it was. I'll miss it, but I'll get over it. And when it comes down to it, I know that in some alternate universe it's still out there...

Edit: And I'll definitely be interested to see it when it's completed. Hear that Pocket Books? I want to SEE it on a cover! Maybe I'll totally fall in love when I see it, who knows.

I haven't had a chance to read Raise the Dawn yet, but someone posted a spoiler description of the new station's design and layout and it sounds very cool, being a worthy successor to the former Terok Nor.

I love the old Deep Space 9, and I'll miss it in the LitVerse.

But, you know, I loved Kirk's Enterprise and the Enterprise-D. Their destruction didn't mean I couldn't love TOS stories set after TSFS or TNG stories set after NEM. And frankly, DSN the series (as compared to DS9 the station) was always more about the characters than the station itself.

Besides, one thing that I kind of have to concede is that the DS9 sets, though amazing and impressive, were still kind of cramped. Lovely as they were, DSN was still produced on a television budget. But now? I get to imagine the new DS9 "sets" as large as I want them to be. :bolian:

To be honest, I haven't even finished Plagues of Night yet. The only way I knew they destroyed it is because Raise the Dawn downloaded to my Kindle today and I accidentally opened it, and the first thing I saw was "Deep Space 9 exploded." So I was like totally caught off-guard and did not expect that. Hence, in part, the overreaction.

Part of my love for DS9 comes from back in the early 2000's, I used to run a Deep Space 9 sim for many years. So, as stupid or irrational as it may seem to some, I've considered DS9 my "baby" for a long time. So when Captain Sisko sees it kersplode, I kinda know exactly how he feels.
