Thesis

Hey! Luddite? Come on!

I don't hate technology at all. I think the steam engine and the telegraph are terrific. And I'm cautiously optimistic about the daguerreotype.

I find LaTeX to be one of the most depressing pieces of software there is. I won't use it.

I'm picturing you posting this from an enormous, pedal-powered difference engine.

Oh, I remember this!

I was writing my master thesis last year and it was, well, unpleasant. Allow yourself some things every night. Be it a great dish, an episode of something, something you really enjoy. It'll soon be your favourite part of the day and something to look forward to besides the end.

Funnily enough, now that I finished, recovered (which really took a while), and let the dentist repair all the damage which stressfilled nights gnashed into my teeth, I now miss the work. Not necessarily the time, but the work. In the aftermath it's kind of exciting.

Good luck, anyway!

Really? Then I guess you don't really need LaTeX-like software to do what you do...

Personally, if I have to write a longer than 3-pages text including a couple of tables and figures, I can't imagine using anything else. I can't even imagine having to deal with Word-like software to write a paper for conference submission... It seems harder to place everything nicely and I think it does not look nearly as good, especially if there is math involved.

Haha...got the first page, that can go inside like it is, written..now only 49 more. ;)
Quite happy with that first page. Decidet now to start with a bit history, because some of the actual problems still have to do with the separation of Germany after the second world war.

*sigh* I just cannot get on with it! Got around 25 pages, though very rough ones...it all sounds horribel. Am not happy with it at all. And now since days I am stuck. My concentration is like dissapeared, my motivation is off, my frustration is high and at the end of the day I feel all guilty and have managed nothing at all. I have the feeling I will fail this and I cannot fail this! Damn it. I did well in everything else and now I cannot get this written? What is wrong with me? Right now I feel I must be the most stupid person in the world. My brain just don´t want to get into working mood.

TerokNor

You are definitely not stupid! It is just overwhelming to work on a big project like this, I understand that feeling completely. Since you are not getting much done anyway, I say that you give yourself a mini vacation and spend a whole day or weekend not even thinking about the thesis, or any other work, at all. Leave the house and go do something fun, indulge yourself. Or just relax in peace if you would prefer some alone time. Just don't feel guilty!! After this you will feel rejuvenated and can come back to the project with a fresh mind.

But I did that a few days ago at my friends wedding...was stuck already before the wedding and am still stuck after the wedding though. And I am already quite out of the time frame I set for myself to get it done to the deadline. If I take more days off (which I just could not do without feeling guilty) I am even more out of it and the deadline comes nearer and nearer.
Somehow I think I have my mind already on the things after the thesis, moving out of my current appartement in 8 weeks, hoping that the plan of going abroad works out, trying to brush up my English and am not at all interessted in reading all those german books and typing away all those german words. Of course if I fail it, I cannot do any of the things I plan for later this year. Should be motivation enough, but somehow it isn´t. When I take a german book in my hand I read like two sentences over and over again in an hour and still have no idea what I have just read. On the other hand my concentration is fine when picking up all the english books I have lying around...I can read them for hours, looking up words in the dictionary..I can even read the dictionary for hours without getting tired and bored of it. My focus is on the wrong things and refuses to be turned back to what is important at the moment.

Grrrr! Does anyone know how I can turn this function in Word 2007 off, that shows me were corrections where made and asks me if I want to accept them or not?

And also, can the following really be correct. Scientific rules make no sense to me at all!
If I have: ...(vgl. Pikler 2010, S. 7). then the dot/ point comes behind the ).
But if I have: ... (vgl. Pikler 2010, S. 7 f.) Then the dot/ point comes inside the ) behind the f and behind the true end of the sentences, but not behind the last )???
Why? That makes no sense, I mean the f just says its page 7 AND 8 instead of writing 7-8, for saving some space, doesn´t it?

Oh how I hate this scientific writing.

TerokNor

I think the feature you are trying to turn off is called Track Changes. I have Word 2003, where it is in the Tools menu, but I'm not sure where it is in Word 2007.

I can't be much help with your other problem either, as I've never written anything in the sciences.

Do you mean Review--Tracking--Track Changes?

I think they do that to avoid having more than one dot, which might be confused with an ellipsis. (...)

I've never seen anyone write "7 f." when they mean "7-8".

Using German Word I suppose?

If so:

Uncheck the "'Änderungen nachverfolgen" field. Well, I guess! I rarely use that.

You need a dot in front and behind of the bracket in the second example. The first dot inside the brackets indicates that "f" is an abbreviation. The dot outside the brackets ends the sentence the bracket is in.
I have fond memories of writing my thesis. :)

Uhm...don´t know. You can write comments inside there and change things in the text and the other sees whats changed and then can click on accept change or decline change, like if the one correcting it put a comma inside, I have to click in front of the comma and accept it. The comments are on a grey colours area on the right side of the paper.

You have never seen "7 f." Do you think it might be wrong I think I remember a teacher tel us that its either 7, 7-8, 7-12 (for example) or hat one ca write 7/ 7 f. / 7 ff.) instead, so that its shorter, one f meaning that page and the one after, two f meaing that page and the pages after.
But it still doesn´t make sense that with wrting it the one way the . is behind the last ) and the other its inside it. Cause its only the one dot and there are no more of them, so no one could mistake it for anything but a simple dot.

As a sidenote our profs told us that "f" and "ff" are okay but shouldn't really be used anymore because of international standards. I just use "7-8". I'm slack, though. I even use "167-8" and not "167-168".

@Emilia: Nothing happens when I uncheck this. Its still there.

An abbreviation?
Well, the one who tried to teach us about these things had no idea of these things either. If I change away all the f...I have hundreds of them, well a lot a least, d have to look up every book again, and I am running out of time.

But the one who corrected it for me said, that when I have the dot behind the bracket while using an f its means the literature is only for the second part of the sentences. But if I do not have it there, but inside and one other right behind the sentences before the brackets start then it means its for the whole or more than one sentences.
But I don´t understand why its is so with the fs, but not the way when you have just one page, cause then the dots is always behind the last bracket and never behind the sentences, unless its a direct word for word..uhm..zitat, then its there and not behind the last one. Its all confusing!

Edit: Oh found it. Have to click on "Original" and it was "Original enthält Markups" before that.

Edit again: OH NO! When I try to write something in it it jumps right back into that stupid function!!!

TerokNor

Oh, now it works. But now things are messed up and moved to pages where they should not be!
All right.. I am calm, I am calm, I am calm...

I´d better write it with paper and pencil, than with the computer! Sometimes I swear this computer programs have a mind on there own and they use it simply to annoy the people trying to work with them. (Or maybe I am just not proficient working with them, but they make me exlode!)

Edit: Now I know why its all messed up!!! My page numbers and foot-notes have gone missing!!!! :klingon: Now I am really in a very bad mood!
