I've been participating in the "52-Week Illustration Challenge" on Facebook, in which a different theme is posted for each week. It started in 2014 and is continuing this year. I've found several excuses for adding a Trek element to a theme or two.

Week 16, 2014, Book cover by Ian McLean, on Flickr
"Have phaser, will travel". Watercolours on white acrylic gesso primed canvas sheet, with double-ended, waterproof, black Sharpie outlining, plus titles in Pages. Stars are opaque white Signo pigment ink.

Week 27, 2014, Snow by Ian McLean, on Flickr
Live from a vacation in Michigan, USA! I've only ever been here in the snow before, but it's summer, of course! The snowman on the right with the "Star Trek" phaser is based on the one made by my penpal and I during out first meeting in January 1984. The little one is based on the one outside our restaurant window in December 2012. The squirrel victim is depicted because - squirrel! Drawn with oil pastels on two backgrounds.

Week 12, 2015, Costume by Ian McLean, on Flickr
"Science fiction media convention costume parade". All of these entrants are me - Tellarites, Andorians and Robin the Boy Wonder - based on photos from several decades of costume parades, drawn and painted in a Perth hotel room. Sketch inked in black Sharpie on watercolour paper, coloured in watercolours and metallic Signo.

Week 13, 2015, Transport II by Ian McLean, on Flickr
"Transporter Room to Landing Party, one to beam down." A four-part piece of an Andorian from "Star Trek" beaming down to a planet. Drawn in black Sharpie onto watercolour paper, coloured with watercolours, two collaged paper templates, and silver glitter.

Week 17, 2015, Fluffy by Ian McLean, on Flickr
"The Trouble With Tribbles". Sketched in black Sharpie, with metallic gold highlights, on watercolour paper. Based on the famous publicity still from "Star Trek". Coloured in watercolours.

Nicely done, sir! The snowmen are my favourite and particularly effective ...

Thank you! Here's the photo reference.

3D Snowman, 1984 by Ian McLean, on Flickr

The phaser and Starfleet insignia were from my penpal's Star Trek collection, and he's wearing a "Go Blue!" pin, the coincidental catchcry of Michigan University. Knowing what we know now about Andorians (via the TV series, "Enterprise"), this is no doubt a rare Aenar snowperson.

Nimslo 3D cameras were hot stuff in the early 1980s, and took four half-size negatives of each subject, and these images were combined under lenticular (rippled) plastic to create a 3D picture. I was curious as to how the combined image would scan (in 2D).

This was the entry I wanted to be in the August art thread, but I somehow misinterpreted how it all works?

Wil'yam Sheq'spir by Ian McLean, on Flickr

Charcoal sketch of Wil'yam Sheq'spir (and yorIq) on orange La Carta Weave textured paper. Detail in black and metallic gold finepoint Sharpie and opaque white Signo, using two Shakespeare images (found in a Google Image search), and enhanced by me with Klingon features. Klingon Chancellor Gorkon once stated, "You have not experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon..." ["Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country".]

Pop Trek by Ian McLean, on Flickr

I customized a "Pop" Rhaandarite Bridge Ensign from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" this week. Here's Billy Van Zandt's character from the movie, holding Kirk's field jacket, of course, standing between the commercially-available Andorian and Data "Pop" figures. (I used a Riff Raff "Pop" figure from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" collection to make the Rhaandarite.)

Excuse me, I meant the gentleman with you in the avatar.

Ah, he is from the official Muppet Whatnot Workshop at the big FAO Schwarz toy store in New York. On my visit to NYC in 2013, I designed him, they made him - and I added the blue antennae and Starfleet insignia.

Betelgeusian Chief Ambassador by Ian McLean, on Flickr

From "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". This is the most expensive Hollywood costume ever worn in a movie by a screen extra, and is barely glimpsed in the movie. The bolt of fabric used in the garment dates back to Cecil B. DeMille and contains real gold and silver thread. Oil pastels and Kindy Glitter Glitz on Quill "marbletone" cream paper, and based on a publicity still.
