There really needs to be a Star Trek TV series based on the movie!

The problem with the Next Gen films was they had this grounding, but the powers behind the films somehow determined that all Star Trek films must have

1) A big comic-book villain

2) At least one SPACE BATTLE

And what is the difference to this movie? The reason why TNG movies were not successful/had problems is the same reason why this movie was successful/had no problems?

IMO, TNG movies weren't as successful because people didn't care about the characters as much. Picard/Data will never be cultural symbols like Kirk/Spock.

I say that the audience doesn't care about what the characters are called, if the actions on screen are awesome and the dialogue is interesting, and if the whole movie around those characters is great. And that is not only linked to Kirk and Spock.

Did you like the trailers for this new movie? Would you have less liked them if the characters had been different? Probably not. The action would have been there, the visuals would have been just as exciting, etc...

So my point is that had they given TNG with Picard & Co the same treatment, or had they created a new crew in the TNG timeline and given those new characters this treatment, it would have been as successful.

I too would love to see a series with the new crew (plus Mr Arex!).

It won't happen, and we probably won't get a new TV series until this film trilogy is done (at least).

The only problem is such a TV series would probably end up watered down to the point you might as well go rewatch season 1 of Enterprise :-(

My bet is that after the next two films this new universe will also die and another team will again reboot the whole franchise.

Any future TV series should be set back in the prime universe.

Nah, that would be silly. What's the point of rebooting everything is you just go back to the universe--which wasn't working anymore?

We already had six tv series in the old universe. Enough is enough.

Best thing to do is leave it for now, when the movies run out of steam they will still be relatively popular but just not enough to justify a $150 million+ dollar budget and thats when the show can start. About 2015/2016. I can wait.

Co-incidentally we would be approaching the 30th anniversary of TNG which at that point will be ripe for a good old nu-timeline reboot! :D

I dunno. How is the new timeline any more suited to spawn a TV series? And since it's not a "full reboot", they would be obliged to stick to many of the old elements.
For example, they WILL bring back the Klingons in a TV series. And the Romulans.
But they cannot redesign the Klingons. They will have to stick to the same old Klingons we know, wearing the same uniforms, drinking bloodwine, having the same old makeup. Yawn.

The AU approach is limiting them almost as much as the old canon. But what would be the worst case scenario is a superficial teen series that completely craps on continuity and common sense, never attempting to establish a new coherent canon- but is a smash hit because its so kewl and flashy.

The best way to go from here in my opinion is to recast again and make a TOS remake in the new universe, going the full reboot route.
But with Ron Moore in charge.

Agreed. The way they rebooted this movie did limit them instead of setting them free of canon. Klingons still need to look like Klingons, the Borg look the same, each Empire and race is located where it was in the original shows, because they explicitly stated that this universe spawns from the original Star Trek universe.

They can't suddenly introduce entirely new races, fro example. Where would those come from? Why where they never mentioned in the 700 TV episodes and 10 movies of the original universe? And most of the other villain races introduced in TNG, DS9 and VOY are still far, far, far away.

TV shows in this universe would eventually have to deal with the Planet Killer, Khan, V'Ger, the Whale Probe, the Nexus, the Borg... AGAIN. Because it all happened in the original, totally unaffected by Nero's timetravel.

And how that is in any way fresh or exciting I will never understand.
