People don't realise that tv viewing figures have gone down these days, we don't need to attract "ordinary" people to make the show a success. The number of Star Trek fans in existence is more than enough to keep a profitable show on the air.
Not unless it's a very low-budget version. You do need quite a few more viewers than the last three Trek series ended up with to keep an expensive show going for more than a couple of years at most. Trek ain't got it, not lately.
