Spoilers Theory On Why The Borg Are Featured In PICARD

Not sure if this requires a spoiler tag, but doing it just in case...

Regarding episode 8, "Broken Pieces", a thought occured to me...

Could the reason the Borg's memory of longer ago being fragmented is because it has been dormant for thousands of centuries?

With the revelation of an ancient race creating AIs going a bad route, could this be the Borg in original form?

This would be another large reason to have the Borg feature so heavily in this series.

I have a second theory, though nothing to really support it except possibly the passage of time.

V'Ger... the homeworld of the machines that gave it sentience. Could THAT be what the ancient race was referring to? V'Ger was INCREDIBLY advanced, far more than anything other corporeal race Starfleet has encountered. Even the Borg. Given all those millennia of just advancing, could that be what the Zhat Vosh are referring to about an AI species that caused all that destruction?

They have no connection to the main story. They are just there as a red herring and name recognition

My guess is that maybe the Borg are somehow linked to this Ancient Civilisation. I think whoever or whatever they are or were, they are something that the Borg fear but over the centuries the memories of this race were buried deep within the hive mind. I think assimilating Ramdha and her knowledge brought those memories to the surface for the collective and to avoid a mass fear driven shutdown the Collective severed the Artifact from the hive mind.

I also think it will be revealed that the Borg Collective is thousands of years old and was the result of an out of control A.I. The Ancient species put them down but not hard enough and the Borg managed to survive in a hidden corner of the Delta Quadrant. It would explain why the Borg were considered by the Vaadwaur to be a minor nuisance with only a handful of systems under their control.

I postulated a sort of ancient first contact between the Borg and the Rommies in one of the other threads several weeks back based on the galaxy map. As it turns out this would have been millennia even before that, but we have no idea just how old the Borg are. They didn't give any indication as to where that planet was, but given the need for Transwarp, it very well could be near the Beta/Delta "border," or at least somewhere between current Rommie territory and Borg territory. (If that makes any sense.) After what happened with Disco, I think the intent is to keep the Borg origins a mystery but belonging to the Delta quad.

To that end, this ancient race existed somewhere in the space between the Romulan part of the Beta quad and the Borg part of the Delta. The meet up with some ancient or proto Borg tens of thousands of years ago. Thinking they need to fight fire with fire, they create an SAI. They push the Borg back but the SAI gets out of control. Some much time later, early Romulans make some exploratory excursions "north" and find the planet.
