Theory on the Monks

So what if the monks are all zombie Timelords? Or what if they're all copies of the Master? Simm's master?

Nope.
Look at the way their mouths slowly open and close while they speak, with no lip sync. Look at the hollow, circular eye sockets. Consider that they used a computer simulation to prepare for their invasion. These are the Mondasian Cybermen without their outer bits. The original "Tenth Planet" Cybermen, which we know are returning in the finale, were more organic than later models, more like humans wrapped in protective garments and life-support machinery. They even had bare hands. And the way their singsong voices emanated from their gaping mouths was one of their most distinctive features. When I saw the trailer for the next episode, saw the repeat of the gaping-mouth behavior, I realized these had to be "naked" Mondasians.

Oh, now that's an interesting theory. I hadn't considered that angle and I can certainly see that being the truth.

Agreed. That's a very interesting theory, Christopher. That thought had not occurred to me. It certainly seems possible.

Since the monks apparently "need humanity's permission to invade" it could be a clever link to medical consent. But doubtful - the Cybermen have never been shy about converting unwilling subjects before.

Though the "ancient pyramid just showing up" might be a link to the notion that the more advanced Mondasians might have visited Earth and taught some of our cultures architecture/mathematics. Pyramids are more the preserve of the Osirians or the ancient Exxilons though.

Actually - the monks DO look a bit Exxilon-y. Apart from the big eyes, but the primitive Exxilons the Doctor met may have evolved those due to centuries without artificial light and cave-living.

The "Hub" technology was nice and white and basic, like the City, too...

Technically, @Christopher is a professional. So, it's a professional theory like all others until it is shown.

Not at all, he has no input on the production of the programme, he has not (admittedly I could be wrong here) written any published Who and he is just a fan and it is a fan theory. Same as any you or I would put forward.

If it's the same as you or I would put forward: why did you feel the need to point out in the first place it's just a fan theory?

I'm gonna stick with Professional Theory... as he a professional writer in the science fiction genre. It's accurate.

I get jealous when I read these threads because I've only ever seen the modern version of Doctor Who.

This must be what it feels like for those who have only seen Voyager and Enterprise.

Because it seems others (like you) take great stock in what he was saying and until what the monks are is shown on screen, it is just a theory and that is worth being reminded of.

And it's not accurate, not by a long shorts, but it's your opinion and you're entitled to it.

I think we're taking great stock because it's a pretty cool theory. It sets up quite nicely the return of the Mondasian Cybermen. It's a theory that no one has proposed and feels very possible.

It is. And thanks for telling me I'm entitled to an opinion. Good to know.

Yes, it is a cool theory, it may even be correct, but until proven otherwise, it is just that, a theory. A fan theory.

Well, one can never be too sure it seems, the line between an opinion and fact, although very rigid, does seem to get blurred all too often. But of course, you weren't being serious at all and instead, you were being facetious.

.

Well, Christopher and I have variously agreed and disagreed about numerous things over an extended time. He knows I give his opinion no extra weight based on him being a writer. But, his opinions are always well thought out. Again, I sometimes disagree with him, and sometimes strongly! But, when he comes up with something intriguing and unique (as far as I know), I'll gladly give him kudos for that.

But, you're right, it's just a theory until it's shown on screen. We'll all find out soon. I'm actually hoping he's correct on this one. Intriguing story possibilities!

You should fix that at once. Go watch some classic Who! :)

I know its all the Doctor and that starting from the beginning would be logical, but are there any particular stories from any particular Doctor that one would recommend that would be a good 'this is classic Who' way to test the water? For instance, I usually recommend "Blink" or "Midnight" of nuWho to any new viewer before going and starting the show from the beginning.

Ask 10 classic Who fans and you'd probably get 10 different answers!

I would agree that it does not make sense to start from the beginning. At least not until you're sure that you want to watch them all. The very early stories are very different from later stories.

My take would be to watch a few of the very best stories from the classic series. If those grab you, then continue watching more. If those don't grab you, then probably classic Who isn't for you. I say that knowing that it's an acquired taste that can be hard for some people to get into.

You could try a few like:
Genesis of the Daleks
Robots of Death
City of Death
Caves of Androzani

Or, just find a poll of top stories and pick a few. If you like those, you might want to sample some from each Doctor to see which eras you like and don't like. After that, you'd have enough info to decide if you want to continue and whether you want to watch the entire series from beginning to end, or just selected portions.

Generally, it is not important to watch in broadcast order. Classic Who is serialized with in each story (i.e., the 6 parts of Genesis of the Daleks are serialized) but rarely between stories. You won't miss much at all by picking a choosing a few stories here and there to sample.
