The weirdly small and empty universe of Discovery

I think the design and execution are incredible in their own right, and I'm getting used to them as Klingons. It's just disappointing that it's caused such a huge backlash. It bothers me a lot when people trash the show or refuse to watch it because of the redesign. This is the first Trek I've gotten to watch as it comes out (no TV as a kid), so I'm a little emotionally invested, lol.

I love to hear your perspective rather than me who grew up with it

My mistake, sorry about that. (Would edit my post if I could, not trying to pick fights at all!) It's easy to assume that the loudest and angriest voices on the internet represent the majority. Ironically enough, I thought anyone who read my post would be angry about the Klingons if I just said the prosthetics were good :T

Now that the Klingons aren't speaking with subtitles any longer, I've warmed to the design a little bit. I wonder if they made some mid-season corrections to allow for more expressive facial features through the heavy makeup as well.

When Human Voq spoke Klingon, he had the same 'accent' as he did when he was in full make up, so I don't think it was the teeth or make up mumbling the words, it's just how they speak.

There's no reason to believe that a completely alien race would have the same vocal cord, tongue and throat structure to form sounds with as we do.

I like the fact that the Klingon in this series sounds other-worldly, and not like a guy with a Boston accent grunting and growling.

I think you're wrong here. The first episode...

I was talking about the opening scene with Burnham and Georgiou, not the entire two-part episode. This one establishes ALOT about Burnham, including her troubled past, and shows the error in judgement that defines her character arc for the rest of the series. In context, what it shows us is that she is a very gifted officer with a well respected pedigree that has just been thrown head-first off her pedestal.

It's all a "chosen one" arc set up for Micheal Burnham.

"Chosen one?" The episode ends with her pleading guilty to mutiny and being sentenced to prison. It's not a "chosen one" setup, it's a "She had everything going for her and now she's nothing" setup.

Nothing I'm hearing about it has been a persuasive reason to watch any more of the show. The Mirror Universe is purely fanwank - "Oh wow, Mirror Universe! Look, Vulcans have beards! Agonizers! Wheeee!"

It may just be a series of amazing coincidences, but I'm beginning to notice that the people complaining the loudest about Discovery are also the people who, for various reasons, know the least about it.

It's almost as if most of the negative opinions about the show aren't related to the show at all.

Generally, they are not. They are related to what Star Trek "should" be, based upon books, RPGs and general lore, as well as personal interpretations.

I've only read one Star Trek book, and it made my eyes roll too much, despite being written by a Star Wars author.

I've never rpg'd a trek before, but I have had the rare opportunity to fire an AT4. It was quite a thrill.
