The weirdly small and empty universe of Discovery

Nothing I'm hearing about it has been a persuasive reason to watch any more of the show. The Mirror Universe is purely fanwank - "Oh wow, Mirror Universe! Look, Vulcans have beards! Agonizers! Wheeee!"

It is purely fanwank. Though for the first time, the show was actually fun to watch.

I seriously doubt they will be able to keep it up.

So, when it incorporates core elements from classic trek it’s naught but fanwank, but anything less than plywood sets with lashings of red paint and it’s an aberration and affront to Rodder’s vision.

Sheesh. Is it time to add a new forum area for die hard moaners to moan about how no trek series is actually good enough to be considered true Star Trek?

I hated the mirror universe beyond the novelty of Mirror Mirror, but DSC take is different enough to be interesting.

The Mirror Universe is not a "core element from classic trek" - that's inflating its significance beyond all reason. The Mirror Universe is a gimmicky trope, no different from Superman trotting out Mr. Mxyzptlk every now and again to trick him over and over. It's a little thrill for people who know Trek inside and out and just want to revisit that exact same storyline over and over and over with minor variations. Everyone we know is there, and they're all evil! Vulcans with beards! On DS9 it seemed little more than an occasional excuse to have the women sex it up a bit - you know, they're all into sex because they're Evul.

It's throwing circus peanuts to the superfans.

Eh it's nothing like that. It's frankly better then any previous Mirror Episode by far.

Based on everything that you all are so excited about, it's exactly that.

Oh, Burnham's dead BFF is the evil Emperor! Wheeee!

It is true that it is quite different than many previous mirror episodes in a sense that they are trying to treat it seriously. I am not at all convinced that this is a good idea, considering how inherently stupid the whole concept is.

Well, they treated it as seriously on TOS as they did anything else. It's true that on DS9 it was kind of a romp.

You're not a superfan, though, right? You're far too smart and refined to fall for foolishness, pandering, and fanwank.

You'll spend hours on a Star Trek message board arguing with people who disagree with you about something you don't like and don't care about (?), but otherwise nobody's going to pass an inferior, wanky, waste of time past you. Far too smart and learned for THAT!

Please, don't stop. Continue to enlighten a whole message board filled with people who are fans of the series about how dumb we all are for being drooling, easy-to-please fans of something that smarter non-superfans with a more refined taste would reject outright. Your perspectives have become something I'm sure we all have come to value and appreciate. I'd guess you're only one or two very well-written, thoughtful, respectful and pursuasive posts away from convincing all of us to agree with you.

Do you consider this an insightful critique?

If folks are entertained by it, they're entertained by it. You seem to think people who like [thing] should be above liking having more of [thing] given to them, but I can't figure out why that should matter to you. Unless your main motivation here is to act superior to everyone else.

It couldn't possibly be that though.

Pretty sure being entertaining as part of the TOS bible. Could be wrong though...I don't think I am.

No, Star Trek isn't supposed to entertain. It should inspire and shape entire cultures. It is the model to which all humanity should aspire to! It should cause everyone who watches to rethink their values and ethics every single episode. Anything less than that is not Star Trek! #GeneWouldHateThis

I have to agree that these are far better than DS9 mirror episodes. Then again, I pretty much loathed those, so it's not exactly a high bar...

I'm always up for fun, campy, twisted versions of characters I like.

DS9's were hit and miss, but overall in the aggregate I liked them. I didn't like them as much as the standard DS9 episodes, but they were better than the Ferengi episodes or the Lwaxanna episodes. They were probably the best of the "once per season obligatory visit" episodes.

I've enjoyed the Mirror episodes of DSC a lot more than much of what came prior. They manage to be fun and engaging in ways the rest of the series up until this point has not been.

I think they painted themselves into a corner to try and develop the characters.
Design so far has been laser-focused on the ships, tech, and uniforms. I haven't read anything about them having a dedicated planet design team. Pahvo was fairly boring (and that tree thing looked awful IMO), but the sand planet and rebel base were interesting and fresh.

Their dedication to practical effects is super exciting, though. We probably all agree that the Klingon redesign is a disaster (ironically enough, Fuller wanted to keep the TOS uniform colors but was behind the new Klingons) but the prosthetic tech is great. Saru looks fantastic, and that's all makeup and prosthetics.
Check out this video of the Shenzhou set construction:

So they've got those huge sets made for the Discovery and will be able to reuse parts of the Disco and Shenzhou sets for any other Federation ships we come across. The Klingon ship set is done, there are a bunch of pieces, and they seem to be modular. This should free up a lot of time for set design in season 2.
By reusing parts of the Federation ship sets (like they did with the Klingon ship set for the rebel base), we could see some great cities on away missions. As long as they don't spend too much time designing stuff for a million new aliens, the away missions should be cool once they finally start to happen.

...or we'll get a bunch of color-swapped natural landscapes like on Pahvo and way too much ship time with fancy new aliens.

My mistake, sorry about that. (Would edit my post if I could, not trying to pick fights at all!) It's easy to assume that the loudest and angriest voices on the internet represent the majority. Ironically enough, I thought anyone who read my post would be angry about the Klingons if I just said the prosthetics were good :T

I think the design and execution are incredible in their own right, and I'm getting used to them as Klingons. It's just disappointing that it's caused such a huge backlash. It bothers me a lot when people trash the show or refuse to watch it because of the redesign. This is the first Trek I've gotten to watch as it comes out (no TV as a kid), so I'm a little emotionally invested, lol.
