Spoilers The Walking Dead Season 10

Great episode with a stand out moment being one which I doubt was intended to be as memorable when it was written or filmed. Yumiko talking about how our plans can go to shit because of things beyond our control. Due to the shit going on in the world at the moment, that scene carries added poignancy it would not have otherwise have had. And speaking of poignant moments, I can't help but notice the goodbye scene between Ezekiel and Jerry carries with it a degree of finality to it

So, we finally get the long-teased answers to Beta's origins, backstory and pre-apocalyptic life, and as guessed by the various clues dropped all season, even before that with material from the previous season of Fear the Walking Dead, Beta is revealed to be a famous country music singer. We get some interesting looks into who he was with him returning to what was his home, plus additional details provided by Ryan Hurst on Talking Dead afterwards definitely paint a very intriguing picture into who he was and is and why he's so devote to the Whisperer lifestyle and insistent on keeping his identity secret. And now he's repaired his flesh mask using a portion of Alpha's face to cover up what was ripped from the mask previously.

Carol being haunted by an imaginary Alpha was also a really interesting sequence, showcasing Carol's damaged psyche and how getting her revenge and killing Alpha hasn't really brought her peace at all. Even knowing that Alpha was just a construct of Carol's subconscious it still seems weird and surreal hearing Alpha talking about things and people she shouldn't know about at all.

Daryl and Negan's run-in with Whisperers in which it seems the Whisperers are about to swear loyalty to Negan only to have Negan turn the tables, kill them, save Daryl and prove he's worth not killing was laying down some interesting groundwork on the new direction they seem to be taking Negan in.

And we end with Eugene, Ezekiel and Yumiko arriving in a city where the Walkers are done up in cosplay and forced into recreations of tea parties is surreal and amusing and we get an introduction to Princess from the comics making her introduction to the show. Just from what little we've seen so far she seems faithful to the character from the comics but with a twist to make her unique to the show.

Ezekiel is losing his shit. He's another one who I've been sad to see take many falls recently

Ezekiel is dying--his behavior is to be expected. He's no longer looking toward a future, but reacting as full-on as he can, while he can.

Regarding Carol: she's forever hurt by her losses, and has become single-minded about getting rid of threats since the prison arc. In some cases, she was correct (she wanted to kill the captive Terminus member before Tyreese lied and said he already killed him, which may have led to the cannibals tracking the heroes down / eating Bob's leg), while in others, she was too hotheaded about protection (thinking Mika was worse than Lizzie with her walker delusion because Mika did not want to kill anyone). She was probably at her most normal when she isolated herself in the house near the Kingdom--at least there, she did not have to kill, or know the extent of Negan's attacks. After all of that, she's predatory--damaged goods, and I cannot see her ever becoming a normal woman again.

I can't help but notice the goodbye scene between Ezekiel and Jerry carries with it a degree of finality to it

That was the point of the scene: Ezekiel is dying and Jerry knows it, hence his self-correction to finally address Ezekiel by his name, as if to sign off in as personal a manner as possible. It reminds me of the goodbye hug between Eugene and Abraham in the season six finale, "Last Day on Earth"; their embrace was more than just an acknowledgment that their relationship was repaired, but both knew how serious the Savior situation was and that either might not survive. In other words, they knew death was coming. Ezekiel let Jerry know what was going on, so their scene was a goodbye.

It's kind of odd, after all the questionable things that Carol has done, that it's her betrayal of Negan, of all people, that has made her unlikable. I almost felt sorry for him, especially after watching him trying to convince Daryl of his good intentions, and then watching him off the Whisperers who proclaimed him the new Alpha. Not quite, though. He's still a murdering jackass, even if he's the hero of his own story. "You don't kill people who don't deserve it, and you never kill kids." He's got a code!

Speaking of the new Alpha, there seems to be some disagreement among the rank and file about who that is. I wonder if that will cause complications for Tall, Dark, and Ugly. Who is a famous C&W singer. And who is creating his own horde.

Speaking further of Alpha, Carol seems to have been briefly haunted by her hallucination. Not sure what that was about.

The most interesting part of the episode, I think, was Eugene's quest to follow through with meeting Stephanie, accompanied by Ezekiel and Magna. He got some understandably negative feedback from the gang, but he got off easy. Maybe too easy, considering the Twilight Zone that he's wandered into. A whole city cleared of Zombies by turning them into performance art? I thought I had accidentally changed the station to Z Nation. :rommie: And that girl can't be Stephanie-- the personality doesn't match the voice on the radio. But are they part of the same community? Or did this weird girl bring the city under control all by herself? Only a couple of episodes left to find out.

And poor Ezekiel is really winding down. The world of Walking Dead is basically reality with the one conceit of the Zombie Apocalypse, so I don't think there will be any magic cures for him before he goes-- although I would certainly not object. We're losing too many people of great stature lately.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Laurie Cohan returning THIS season... which I assume is how Ezekiel will be saved... Maggie's new community will perform surgery on him. (But that will be next season)

For me Carol's delusion RIGHT AFTER Michonnes drug induced one seems like a quick technique repeat. But I am soooooo glad it didn't live up to its title

I've been assuming that Maggie's return will be a big moment in the finale, but it never occurred to me that this might lead to Ezekiel being saved. That's a good idea.

So... How the walkers are treated is, for obvious reasons, not consistent with biological needs and there's a lot of questions as to "how they work" when they become overly decomposed and filled with holes and such but...

With Alpha's head where was the raspy growl coming from? I mean, it's odd to look at a severed head and to hear it INHALE in order to make a sound. When we saw the "line up" of heads of the pikes they were all silent but here Alpha growls and snarls when she shouldn't be able to.

That caught my attention as well. Was that the first time we've seen a severed Zombie head on the show?

This is the first time ever the show has gone further than my reading of the comics. I will probably finish the comics over the summer but for now it is kind of fun not knowing where the show is going.

We've seen severed heads several other times, Michonne's pets in Milton's lab and the line-up on the border provided by alpha. Sure there's others. Previous times they were silent.

.

The Governor had his aquariums of walker heads. When Michonne pulled them to the floor (S3 - "Made to Suffer"), the free heads were making growling noises and snapping at her.

I assumed that was just her neighborhood or block not the whole city. Scenesters are just into local areas, right? :) The character's name is Princess from what I understand. That gun of hers could've changed the whole season's events if they had met her a little sooner...

Thanks for the responses on the severed Zombie heads--I remember the Governor's aquarium but not what happened when they fell on the floor.

The Walking Dead
Season 10 - Episode 15 - "The Tower"

Daryl & Judith: Daryl telling Michonne being on the run reminds him of the old days, and seems like "ages ago". I guess in-universe time, it has been some time, since the trip to Alexandria in 5B.

Judith is a smart kid, but being "in the field"...not sure about that, even with her being a good student of Daryl. She's a chip off the Michonne block, but she's not ruthless, hence her wondering about the Whisperer's family. Of course, her growing sadness was tied to the knowledge of her mother's mission (rather, how long she will be away), and fearing Daryl would leave too....if he knew where Michonne was going. The uncle/niece relationship between the two was so unexpected just a year ago, but its turned into one priceless scene after another. Actress Cailey Fleming was an absolute coup for the series. She has not had one bad or awkward moment.

Carol: Kelly's self-affirmation and encouragement for Carol was interesting. I always wondered how much the other characters (outside of Daryl and Rick) knew about Carol's past of being an abused wife. Now we know--its everyone. I assume Daryl passed that on.

Negan / Lydia: Surprising the others were not spitting at Negan's presence. I assumed he would have some trouble even dealing with Lydia, but what was not expected was her informing him that most wished he died too. Pushing past the sting of that revelation & choosing to help Lydia release the anguish she's bottled up, the series continues to play with the concept of redemption and forgiveness which has floated around Negan since that infamous "old Rick" dream sequence several seasons ago.

Whether or not he is forgiven remains to be seen, but I'm sensing that it will be a plot device to force Negan to make the decision that leads him to face off against Beta (last stand) or could take the character in a direction a bit different than the comic.

Beta / Whisperers: When, oh when is this nutjob going to meet his end? At times, he's more of an irritant than Negan at his worst. His thinking he's hearing his inner idiot direct his actions is not creepy (as intended), but annoying--like his obsession with that Whisperer death philosophy.

Ezekiel / Eugene / Yumiko / "Princess": Princess is a bit batty. Being alone for a year could be the excuse, but dressing up walkers...nutty. So, she's a has a "hurt" personality / background similar to Eugene's. Makes me wonder if she was abandoned in the city...and if is there something else going on with her. The teaser points to this group returning to the others...

Father Gabriel: I did not like his moments in the teaser. Looks pretty dark. I really hope he survives.

NOTES: The season finale--as you all know--has been pushed back to some unknown airdate later in the year. The title-- "A Certain Doom"--reads like a more than unpleasant swan song for some key players. One thing about TWD TV series is that episode titles rarely promise something horrible but fail to deliver (think: "This Sorrowful Life", "Too Far Gone", "Last Day on Earth" & "The Day Will Come When You Won't Be"). In other words, get ready.

GRADE: A+.

Pretty good episode, no complaints though I too am ready to get the finish line with Beta.

Anyone watch The Walking Dead? Khary Payton just looked too damn good, chill and happy sitting there in that hooded robe. (Booya)

Yeah, I want to put the Whisperers to bed permanently. I’d like to see more of the larger paramilitary organizations out there who are (ostensibly) trying to rebuild things. There may still be people out there who know what the walker disease is and trying to cure it. What about the people that gave our characters the books on how to rebuild? They’re being sent in a new direction by influencers, but their plans are always getting stymied by the bullies-of-the-season. Unfortunately, I suspect those bigger groups are being reserved for the Rick Grimes movie(s) and we’ll likely not see much of them in any of the shows.

Great episode. The stuff with Ezekiel, Eugene and Yumiko meeting and dealing with Princess were a delight to watch. In addition to being completely alone in an abandoned city for over a year, it appears Princess was something of an outcast even before the apocalypse, making her somewhat neglectful and unintentionally inconsiderate to the others she's now with. Fun character and her interactions with the others were a highlight of the episode.

Meanwhile in the Communities, everyone has evacuated to an abandoned hospital as Beta and what's left of the Whisperers lead a herd of Walkers to attack. Beta appears to be losing it, and even the other Whisperers are starting to question their commitment to the cause. And while this storyline is building up to an epic showdown in the finale, we get a lot of little character moments throughout this that were really great. Daryl and Judith on patrol in the woods bonding over family and doing the right thing. Carol and Kelly getting through their feelings regarding the disappearance of Connie. Negan and Lydia dealing with the impact of Alpha's death on their lives.

And damn, the preview for the finale they had on Talking Dead afterwards. It looks so good and it absolutely sucks that we're stuck waiting for it, and worse we don't really know how long that wait is going to be since nothing can really be guaranteed at the moment. The one positive is that by the time we do get to watch it, we know it'll be a time when coronavirus is either passed us, or the worst of it is behind us. We have that to look forward to.
