The unnecessary reboot/remake of the week thread

My kids took me out to see the new "How to Train Your Dragon" last weekend for Father's Day. I would have preferred the new M:I movie, but since my son's 2.5 year old came with, it was fine, and actually really good.

This is the first time I've seen a film in a theater since "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny." Last time I went to a movie, you could get a free refill on a large popcorn. Now they only give you a refill on an extra-large. I can't eat that much popcorn anymore, but it was still pretty shocking. Well, not THAT shocking.

They made an Ice Road sequel with very little ice road in it. Liam Neeson also suddenly has a set of skills he didn’t in the first movie.

Ticket prices in Türkiye have increased to 320-400 TL due to the bad economy. Consider that you pay 320-400 dollars for a movie in the USA, the situation is that bad and while ticket prices were more affordable in Turkey in 2018 and 70 million tickets were sold, last year it dropped to 30 million tickets.
320-400 dollars for a single movie ticket?!? Ah...No. Current averages run from $12-$17 USD, maybe lower, depending on matinee vs prime hours.

My point is the snacks and drinks for a family of 3 or 4 could easily put you over the $100 USD mark in one night.

In Turkish currency, to put it in some perspective, that's around 4,000 lira.

I find that I can cut costs down by being a member of Cinemark's Movie Club. There were times in the past when I didn't have to pay for tickets. My biggest grip is the lack of quality movies. The only film that I can say that I really enjoyed this year was Sinners. Thunderbolts was okay. The other movies I saw this year were forgettable. There is one film I despise, and that is Elio.

"Honey, let's take the kids to see HTTYD"

(theater prices the last time I went
2 adults $25
2 kids under 12 $15
4 drinks $30
4 popcorn $20
______________
$90
btw, my city's paper has reported a bedbug infestation at a local theater.)

"Or we can stream it and get pizza we like for half that..."

"Let's skip the bedbug check, dear."

I remember box office analyst and movie critic Dan Murrell did analyze the rise in prices in movie tickets, as well as popcorn and drinks in theaters, that was maybe last year or the year before.
He found that, since the 1990s, these prices have not gotten that much more expensive, but pretty much kept up with the rate of inflation.
What he did note, though, is that wages in general have stagnated compared to the rate of inflation, and thus theater prices have taken up a bigger part of people's income.
So, the problem is not that cinemas have gotten more expensive, it's that people's purchasing power has dropped significantly over the last few decades.

Also, and I don't know who needs to hear this but you don't have to eat at the theater, you can just see the movie
There is always free gum under the seats.

I would always eat before I went to the movies, and wear a light jacket, with interior pockets that would hold 12 oz cans of soda.

We don't keep popcorn at home due to my wife's allergy to any kind of corn and corn byproduct, so getting it last week when we went to the theater was a massive treat. I could live off popcorn and miss it dearly.

I just posted in the James Gunn thread, that that is what I like about my local Mom and Pop one screen cinema.
You can get food delivered to your seat - burgers, fries, sandwiches, pizza, fish and chips, chicken tenders and fries, etc.
They open the doors about an hour before the movie, give you a menu, have the server come and take your order and it's usually delivered before the previews/movie starts, so there's no one getting up and moving around.
There's three showings a day, morning, afternoon and evening. The evening show is "adults only" and they serve alcohol.
It's $10/ticket for the morning & afternoon show and $13 for the evening.

Or do what millions of people have been doing for ages and sneak stuff in. Me personally I always love popcorn at the movie so I always would get one and a soda. But I have snuck in some fruit before. Like a orange in my jacket. Candy bars etc.

Paramount+ is remaking The Stand, again.

I'm sure it will be as bad as the previous attempt. Only way it would work IMO is if they don't try and do the book story again and instead do something new like focus on the people, after the events of the book is over. I kind of like the idea of the show focused on people going out their looking for other survivors to bring back to Colorado. But it needs to acknowledge that in this universe GOD and I assume the Devil as well is real. Maybe even introduce a bad guy who considers himself the ant-christ though he might just be a bad person who was tricked by a Randall Flagg type of demon.
