It's been about 20 years since I read this. I remember it expanded on the film, but I can't remember if there was any explanation given as to how the Klingons got hold of Federation photon torpedoes? I would assume it would have been from Cartwright and West, but I can't remember for the life of me if this was explained.

I never read the novel, but there was a deleted subplot with Federation arms dealers (specifically, photon torpedo manufacturing companies) were also involved in the conspiracy, which would tie things up nicely.
