The unappreciated game thread

I've only played the demo of Freedom Force, but I thought it was fantastic. I really need to buy it off Steam soon.

Final Fantasy VIII. I wasn't really on the internet when it came out and when I did follow the internet conversation years later, I was a little shocked that it was so hated. That bit at the end of disc 1 where you have to assassinate Edea is one of my favorite "set pieces" ever. Story got a little wacky there later on but the Terminator-style time loop with Squall giving Edea the idea for the Garden and mercenaries in the past is genius. Overall I love the graphic style, and especially the "school" aspect of the guardians. It has kind of a "Hogwarts" feel to it. The two "Gardens" fighting each other is also an awesome set piece. I also thought scaling the monsters with your level was a stroke of genius keeping fights fun all throughout. Kind of new to the RPG (VII was my first) genre so it never occured to me that fans would hate this. Why would they? one-hit fights in "old" zones are literally a waste of time in other RPGs, even the gil you'd get is ridiculously low. Scaling the fights is an awesome idea. I also loved how with a little skill you could Junction yourself into a superbeing. In fact i might replay this game off of PSN i'm getting nostalgic.

VIII suffered in coming on the heels of VII, which was regarded by many as a masterpiece. Personally, whilst I thought VII was very good, VIII was pure genius. I must admit, I've never understood the hate for it other than it can only be down to "We love 7, this isn't 7...." syndrome. I'm a huge fan of FF, and I've played near enough all of them, but VIII is the game that I'm fondest of. Great characters, fantastic graphics, awesome soundtrack, superb combat and ranking system, and what a storyline!

FF VIII (and to a lesser extent VII and X) is why I still have my PS2 gathering dust upstairs somewhere. Luckily, I can now play them on my PS3. I plan on having a re-play of VII, VIII, IX, X (via PS2) and XII (PS2) again in the near-future.

It's a shame that VII seems to get all the plaudits. As I said, IMO, it's a very good game, but to think that it got a prequal game, a spin-off, a movie and a probable HD remake in the near-future, whereas VIII got nothing - that's a bummer.

^^

Famous games count for nothing in my opinion.

... unless they're Halo games... or Final Fantasy... or Doom... oh nevermind...

Does Ascendancy qualify for this category?

Man, spent WAY too much time playing that game while underway in the Pacific... *oy*

Cheers,

Earthbound/Mother 2

It was a SNES game that had graphics only slightly better than NES graphics, but was one of the most original titles for the system, it also has the honor of having the most disturbing final boss in video game history

Conquest: Frontier Wars - Close to my favourite RTS game. It had three nicely different sides to play. The campaign was good and it had was terrific humour in its briefings. Should have got an expansion or a sequel. Given the similarities I almost view Sins of a Solar Empire as its spiritual successor.

Final Fantasy VIII is, IMO, one of the most underappreciated games in the franchise, and one of the most underappreciated RPGs ever made. The game's storyline and characters are awesome, and the Draw mechanic really forces you to employ some strategy instead of just going to town with magic spells and whatnot in every single battle you come across, which is and was rather refreshing.

In terms of games that aren't appreciated as much as they ought to be, I'm gonna mention Final Fantasy II (the original game, not the game that was released for the SNES, which, as many should already know, was actually the fourth game in the FF series); the game took everything that was successful about the original Final Fantasy and tweaked it, adding an interesting and challenging game mechanic that I personally wouldn't mind seeing utilized again, while also introducing an overall story and a plethora of locations and themes that would be repeated in subsequent games, particularly Final Fantasy IV.

Another game that I used to love as a kid and that I don't think has gotten as much respect as it ought to is Legacy of the Wizard; this game was a heck of a lot of fun, and challenging as hell, especially since, if you screwed up even one iota, you essentially had to start the game over, since the only way to complete it was to obtain a certain item, which could only be obtained by meeting certain criteria or getting to a certain location within the game. The thing that made the game fun, despite its difficulty, is/was the # of characters you were able to control, and the various ways that they differed from each other in terms of the way they played. The game reminds me in many ways of Super Mario Bros. 2, which is another game that I don't think gets as much recognition as it ought to, and plays very similarly to it (SMB2).

X-Box - Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb

I don't know if it's because I haven't played a lot of Tomb Raider but I thought this was a really fun game but it gets the most mediocre of reviews. Sometimes in a fight your hat will get knocked off and I don't know what will happen if you don't retrieve it because I always felt compelled to go get it.
