A friend of mine eventually badgered me into watching the film after it came out on DVD. After an hour and change, I got up, apologized, and left; I simply could not stand to sit there and watch these vapid idiots stare at each other any longer. There are bad movies, and then there are movies which are the cinematic equivalent of nails on a chalkboard--incessantly. I've not seen a film this shallow, poorly paced, apathetically acted, terribly written both in terms on plot and character, and yet utterly enamoured of itself without a trace of irony, deluded into thinking itself relevant and poignant, since "Gods and Generals". What utter tripe.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

"Ummm...the youth of today scare me for liking this kind of movie..."

The writing in the books is shallow, kids these days are shallow superficial

I grew up during the Buffy era, and that is the real Vampire shiznit as far as I'm concerned, everything now is just trying to live up to that.

I don't like these books or movies at all. I think they've dumbed down the entire vampire genre while somehow flooding the market with vampires that aren't like vampires at all. If you were a frigging vampire, would you be going to high school? I think not. There certainly wouldn't be romance-sure, there's just a predatory pedophile on campus! And people like this stuff? Kids like this? Adults like this? I can't wait for these teeny vamp thing to pass.

Here's a neat blog I read recently protesting it all http://mizging.blogspot.com/2009/10/victoria-returns.html

It's pretty much wish fulfillment for teenage girls and women. Nothing wrong with that. Potter is wish fulfillment for readers that dream of going to wizard school and finding out they have a special destiny.

I agree that this has very little substance, and has really merely tacked the vampire and paranormal adages on for the hype. Potter is through and through inseparable from its mythos. Twilight isn't.

I feel your pain. I myself cannot stand vampires or the romantic notions they seem to conjure in tweenage girls. But its good that you and your daughter make each other suffer equally.

so I finally saw this thing... I had always intended to get around to seeing it but kept putting it off. But my sis & cousin plan to see New Moon on Friday & invited me along, so I wanted to make sure I saw it before I see the sequel. And I was expecting total garbage, but it wasnt too bad, really it was just nothing new or special as far as the vampire guy loves human girl genre is concerned. Not close to the best vampre film Ive ever seen, but I honestly cant fault anyone who loves this when I totally eat up Moonlight & True Blood... the only difference is that teens tend to be more annoying when it comes to angst than adults(but hey they are teens, what are the adults excuse?) I do think that vampire romance films like this arent really vampire stories so much as the beauty and the beast tale modernized. And Im such a sucker for that theme.:alienblush: Hey why doesnt someone do a modern take Beauty and the Beast?

there were 2 scenes that stuck out at me for their awfulness: Stephanie Myer's cameo(lamer than Stan Lee's cameos!) & the whole bit when Edward takes Bella into the forest and starts zipping around her in the lamest fit of angst Ive ever seen in tv/film- oooh Bella Im a freak! I kill people! I break out in cgi glitter in the sun! Oh how could you love me!!! that scene was so terribly written & staged!

anyway I was trying to think of any vampire movie Ive seen where the good vampire is actually happy to be a vampire and I cant think of any. When they are happy theyre also usually evil...But I havent seen all the vampire films out there so anyone know if this has been done? & if not well that's a twist on the vamp film someone out to try out!

I'm sorry, I just have to interject since so many people are fond of incorrectly stating this.

Harry Potter does not have depth - it has style. There is not a drop of thematic meaning in Harry Potter, however it is charmingly written and has entertaining plots.

Twilight is severely lacking in style and meaning and plot - at least that was my impression from the first 1/3 of the audio book.

Oh please...I love to read this negative comments about TWILITE. They are aimed at horny teenaged girls in the same way that LOTR was aimed at dorky boys. I bet the ratio of girls to boys at TWILITE and LOTR is exactly opposite. I'll let you know when I see the new one with my daughter. But I'm willing to bet my nose will think its in a tuna factory when I go into that screening of twilite.

Gez, the movie isn't that bad. Boring, trite, juvenile, cliche, certainly but I've seen far worse movies with the same problems. It's exactly what you'd expect Anne Rice rewritten for 13-year old girls to be. The fact it doesn't appeal to many outside that demographic isn't exactly shocking.

Well, it's not Ulysses or anything but I don't think you can say that the Potter books are thematically empty.

The themes in the Potterverse are generally age-appropriate simple life lessons, but that's different from being completely absent.

Frankly I wish the Potter books had existed when I was 9. I might not have been such a thoroughly unmitigated bastard for most of my life.

I've never understood the thinking in a teenage girl's brain. Never. Especially when I was a teenager myself.

Why do they like Twilight so much? I suspect it's all in the pretty teenage boys who look good on a poster with the word "THROB!" splashed on it.

...and we trek dorks like space ships and zap guns. It cuts both ways.

I saw the first one, rented. It was decent but overstayed it's welcome and at points was just damn boring and  worthy. If I were to see the second it would have to be a date with a lovely lady or a rental. I'm a 26 year old guy though so I'm not exactly the target for these films.

Heh. Just wait 'til "Breaking Dawn".

Worst ending of a series EVERRRRR.

Really? Almost everyone I know who enjoys The Lord of the Rings is female. (Fortunately, I've met only one excessively enthused fan of the series, who is also the only Dungeons and Dragons - or something like it . . . White Owl, perhaps? - player I've ever known. She's probably a Twilight fan, too.)

Come to think of it, two girlfriends in a row spent no small amount of time explaining elements of the story to me. They'd both been waiting years for the movies - one since she was a small child.

I've never cared much about spaceships. I've always liked Star Trek for its heroism, integrity, and aspiration. (I like it for a lot of the same reasons I like Master and Commander and The West Wing.) The spaceship isn't Star Trek; it's just the vehicle.

(That said, I was thrilled to helm the real USS Enterprise, in no small part because of Star Trek.)

The only issue I have with the Twilight movie is that a lot of the time Edward says/does things which only an obsessive stalker/abusive boyfriend would do... and it's treated as if that's completely acceptable behaviour.

The plot, style of Twilight isn't really much of an issue but when girls are falling for a character who comes out with such gems as:

"Don't tell anyone, they're not going to believe you anyway"
"I like to watch you sleep"
He follows her around the street at night.
"It's like you're my own personal brand of heroin."

He's frankly a creep, yet he's meant to be attractive? The fact that girls do seem to adore him while believe Bella's behaviour (which is as bad) is fine. just frightens me.

It's pretty much wish fulfillment for teenage girls and women. Nothing wrong with that.

What's wrong with it is the nature of the wish it's fulfilling. As others have pointed out, Twilight's female lead is a passive victim whose life and identity revolve entirely around being some guy's woman. And the guy comes off as a creepy stalker, to boot.

When I was a teenager, I had Leia and Ripley and Juliet Parrish. People who ran their own lives and didn't take any shit. Bella is not my idea of a good role model for young women.
