The TV format to replace HD

Don't worry. Your 1080p isn't out of date just yet. You still can't buy a TV with any higher resolution, and there won't be anything available that's better for a while. The format in that story has been in development for a few years and it will be a long time before it will be ready for commercialization. The bandwidth required for that video stream is way above anything that is feasible at the moment.

Now, go enjoy your 1080p.

Don't worry much. Here in the US, the station I work for just recently switched to HD for local newscasts and programming, and we were only the
92nd station in the country to do so.

There's lots of infrastructure that needs to be in place for the US analog cut-off date, and even then low power transmitters may stay analog till 2012.

If it's taking that long for everyone to get on the HD bandwagon, then the Next Thing will be well after 2012. You'll be ready for another TV then. :)

Yeah same here in the UK. analogue TV is still switched on and to view thew HD channels that's are available you need to subscribe to them, and i think 2012 is the same date we have as you for total analogue switch off country wide.

It will be another 20 years before any next generation of television is introduced. That's the rule of thumb in the electronics industry. You need at least 20 years between technologies to make a buck on the old one. And never forget - this is not about technology, but about making a buck.

We have a Toshiba 42" 720P and we're ecstatic (got it for $800 after price match too). HD channels look terrific, like you could reach out and actually interact with the environment on the other side of the screen. So I'm not worried. :D

Switch over has already started, they're going on a region by region basis, with the last region being London in 2012. Although they're currently in the process or reshuffling the multiplexes on Digital, to fit all the existing channels on 5 multiplexes, as opposed to the 6 they're currently on. Once that's done they'll begin converting the 6th to MPEG4 DVB-T2, and launching 3 free to air HD Channels, 1 being BBC HD, the other two are to be decided by aution I believe.

Also, you don't have to subscribe to pick up 3 HD channels, should be 4 by the end of the year. Currently on Freesat BBC HD and ITV HD are transmitting free, also LUXE HD is showing free to air, which you can tune in on any free to air box, including freesat receivers. Channel 4 HD is believed to be in talks to go on freesat, too.

^^^So i need to buy one of these freesat boxes to get these HD channesl, plus do these work with the same type of aerial that we use for freeview or would you need a dish, we cant put anything like that on the outside of the buildings, although we do have a cable/sat type commun aerial box that was just installed.

You need a dish, a communal Sky dish would do, they work off the same satellite cluster. I think the cheapest HD receiver is around £120 from Argos.
Also, if you have a Sky HD box you can get BBC HD without subscription, I believe Channel 4HD is also free, so long as you have an activated card.

When Freeview HD launches you'll need a new receiver for that, too.
