The Trill in TNG vs DS9

Isn't it possible that there are two sentient humanoid species on Trill

Well, the Trill culture is interstellar. Humanoid species from a lot of different places would be available to the symbionts; perhaps the Trill in the 24th century are beginning to experiment with new host options, and have found several promising species while deciding that e.g. humans are not to their liking.

Alternately, it may be that there was no humanoid species on planet Trill originally. There was just this species of massively proficient body-hunting symbionts who'd pounce on any largish animal - and they struck gold when they pounced on unsuspecting Kriosian astronauts and took over their oh so handy bodies and minds. It wouldn't take too much convincing to get immigration going when the advantages of being joined would be revealed to the rest of the Kriosian society.

It seemed, goofy as it sounds, that the augment virus added bumps to smooth-headed aliens, while taking them away from already-bumpy heads. When infected at the end of "Divergence", Archer grows (temporary) forehead bumps.
