The Trek Channel

Do you think it would be a good idea for trek?

The channel could not only be the shows and movies. But perhaps live coverage from conventions and trek specials. Also, they could do a new show or two, just with a little lower budget. Fan shows being aired is another possiblity. Let me know what you think and other things that could be aired on the channel.

Doubt it would last long but I'd tune in. Even though the dvd's are out there's something about turning on TV and knowing a Trek show is about to start.

As prolific as the visual works of the STAR TREK franchise are, they aren't enough to fit into one potentially 24-hours-a-day channel. I'd actually want this new channel to have more genuine sci-fi shows (ie, relative to the space fantasy shows like BSG) on the side - like Doctor Who, Shatner's TekWar, reruns of the modern Outer Limits, etc. If we must have less genuine sci-fi shows, at least they should have Trek alumni (Quantum Leap comes to mind).

In addition, there are space-related and other science documentaries narrated by Trek alumni to consider, such as Patrick Stewart's Space Age.

[Even here in Canada, SPACE is becoming too accommodating of not-so-sci-fi stuff, particularly horror movies.]

Actually you look at your average extra channel (especially those on Freeview here in the UK) and it's mostly the same programming repeated over and over ad nauseam. Look at any TV listings magazine and focus on the non-mainstream channels and you'll discover that. The entire Star Trek franchise, plus additional material made such as DVD extras, old documentaries, alternative prints - films in 4:3, 16:9 or original ratio, cliffhanging shows edited together to run as TV Movies... more than enough material to compete. It would be no different than say Manchester United (Football) or other fan orientated channels, which only operate a few hours a day. The rest of the time you tune in, they seem to be trying to sell you stuff...

Malleus: Like ChristopherPike said most extra channels play the same stuff over and over. With just the plain old trek shows and movies that is 700 hours. They could play some infomercials late at night if they wanted. Also, having a new trek show or two, fan shows, convention coverage, trek specials and maybe some discovery channel type future tech shows it would be plenty. Also like was mentioned extras from the DVDs and maybe some new interviews, the possiblities are almost endless.

In the USA we have a channel on cable/sat called NickGAS (probably availible elsewhere too) all they play is lterally 6 shows. At least two of the six only had 3 seasons of 30 min episodes. Yet, with this lack of programming, I still find myself watching this channel

Anyway, it is just an idea I have had for a long time. Maybe CBS/Paramount could make some money off of it and give us a GOOD new show.

Thanks for the comments.

I think Star Trek has suffered from overkill.

I can't imagine a Trek channel would be good for the franchise.

The same stuff repeating over and over with commercials during the night.

Sounds awful.

There was once a Star Trek night a few years ago in the UK and I thought it was pretty good, it had quiz shows on and it even had a klingon presenting before episodes, it was very funny.

We do have a Trek channel in Japan. I started out as an individual enterprise, which required equipment to receive only that channel, then it was taken over by DirectTV, which was later taken over by SkyPerfect. It shows a lot of Trek, Trek-related interviews, etc., but it also fills out the schedule with various old U.S. shows. It used to be called SuperChannel. Now it's Super Drama TV (channel 360). But it runs through TOS, TAS, and the rest regularly (one or two episodes every weekday), as well as the Trek movies. It does 24-hour back-to-back Trek only occasionally.

I'd prefer a science fiction channel that showed every Trek series, in the correct order, as well as the wealth of other shows that just aren't on TV anymore (Babylon 5, anyone?).

There's not enough Trek material to fill out a 24 hour TV channel for more than a month, and that would just make the material grow old, anyways.

I think we could make the point moot by storming the programming offices of the Sci-fi channel and remind them that more people would watch if there was less crap being aired on a regular basis.

I think a Trek channel would be a giant step back. When Trek isn't on a mainstream channel it would not gain new viewers and would just die slowly

There's not enough Trek to sustain a channel for more than a few months. It would be better to create a science fiction channel with Trek as a major part of it. Paramount thought about making their own sci-fi channel at one time. I think evnetually all the TRek shows would've ended up there along with other Paramount shows, movies and new shows. Trek could anchor a channel like that.

I think an all-Trek channel would be overkill. Plus, there's no original programming of any kind to lure in viewers. Star Trek repeats all-day long, every day? And that's it??? How boring. Convention coverage would be cringe-worthy and painful to watch. Specials would be nice, if done properly. Any new Trek series would end up on a larger network, to get more attention and viewers. So, there just isn't enough material for an entire network.

I would definitely support a better Sci-Fi channcel. The one we've got here in the U.S. is terrible.

Indeed. As well as old sci-fi shows in general, and maybe imports that don't get shown anywhere else, like a show I like but will not gratuituously mention.

You know... kind of like the Sci-Fi Channel. But without the non-sci-fi. ;)

Bite your tongue, I want my Star Trek: Mansquito!

...hey there's an idea. Start a Star Trek Channel and then get busy on new productions to fill the time, even if they're cheap-ass.

At this point, yes. I'd even watch Star Trek: Mansquito.

Star Trek: Extreme Wrestling

Watch "Big Bad Daddy" defend Deep Space 9 against The Defender of Voyager "Captain Doom" in a steel cage fight

A web channel might work but it would probably be done all wrong with a bunch of fans hosting the channel, dressed up in uniform while masterbating over the theme music of TNG.

:wtf:

I think that's an awesome idea. The movies, the shows, convention coverage, special features such as "Trekkies", interviews with cast members. Heck yeah, I'd tune in!

What about broadcasting Fan Made series and the advertising between them makes money to run the station and greese CBS's pockets to keep the thing in good favor for them. I think the Fan Filmers would love it as it gives them a new outlet and CBS would be happy as it gives them Cash.

I think Star Trek: Exeter would be cool, all 3 episodes of it
