If you haven't heard of it, they were real hand-held sensors sold in the 90's.

I remember that! I wanted one so badly when I was the archivist for an organization in Ottawa... I had it justified as being an environmental monitoring tool. Problem was that I couldn't find it when I had to spend my budget!

I had the opportunity to use one way back in 96. I think they were marketed towards educational institutions and would be considered to be the first real-world tricorder, albeit a bit limited in what it can do. Unfortunately, the company went bankrupt in 2001, I think.
