The Top 376 Films Of All Time So Far, Mostly Ten By Ten

The Blu-Ray may have three diffferent versions, if it's anything like the last standard DVD release.

As for the long-awaited Number One........

...........the winner isssssssssss................

------NOT a superhero, musical, action, silent, foreign, animated, disaster, epic, sci-fi, war, western, documentary, martial arts, Shakespeare, period, gangster, historical, sports, 3-D, Star Trek, John Wayne, Melanie Griffith, Tarantino, Coppola, Spike Lee, Kubrick, James Cameron, color, James Bond, Spielberg, or short film. Nor is it a British production, sequel, or remake, and it doesn't glorify the Confederacy. And it wasn't made after 2010. Let the guesses begin.

I'm pretty sure Divine's film wasn't a musical, though other versions are musicals. It's been ages, though, so I could be misremembering.

I consider HAIRSPRAY to be a musical, in the same way FAME is. And it's another film I should have placed in the 376. But even if it weren't a musical, it'd be invalid for Number One thanks to the collective mass of NOTs.

Starkers noticed that horror was left out of the NOT category......as were dramas and comedies. I had to disqualify HAIRSPRAY because it was in color. Number One has none......not even for a second. Apologies to RAGING BULL fans.

I'll also say that one performer from another Top Ten pick appears in Number One.

It's a good movie -- one of Hitchcock's best, even. But if I had to pick only one film he made, it would be North By Northwest.

Here's how Hitchcock fared on the 376 besides PSYCHO.....

81. North by Northwest
129. Frenzy
153. The Birds
178. Rope
201. Lifeboat

Only two other directors managed six slots besides Hitchcock.
Spielberg.......

15. Jaws
54. Saving Private Ryan
57. E.T.
59. Raiders of the Lost Ark
108. Munich
287. Close Encounters

.......and Brian DePalma.

86. Mission: Impossible
124. Obsession
206. The Fury
281. The Untouchables
303. Carrie
338. Sisters

Perhaps CLOSE ENCOUNTERS should be higher. But had Hitchcock lived to see DRESSED TO KILL (and he almost did) he could've legitimately sued the pants off DePalma in 1980.

After Friday expect Number 375 (THE AVENGERS) to jump significantly in position.....

I haven't seen that many DePalma directed films, but Blow Out is a pretty decent thriller, worth as much consideration as the first Mission: Impossible film (which I don't mean to be a derisive comment).

As far as Hitchcock goes, Rope is an interesting experiment, but not a great movie. I've never seen Lifeboat, although you're placement of the film on your list has me interested in seeing it. The lack of Rear Window on the list is hard to fathom, though. I think The Birds is a better movie than it has been given credit for, but it's not a great movie.

You should post the whole list (put it in spoiler tags if it doesn't fit) at once.

Barely related, Roger Ebert just posted his top ten choices for this year's Sight and sound poll. Due to a rules change, The Decalogue had to go, so he replaced it with Tree of Life. A fine choice if I ever saw one, although there are plenty of dissenters who don't care for the movie (or much of Malick's other work, I suspect) at all.

I expect it would fit....if the moderators wouldn't object to my copying and pasting it over 2-3 days. A post in progress, essentially. But either way, I'm satisfied.

75. Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
74. Black Sunday (1977)

I'd say THE AVENGERS (2012) can now be placed betwen these two. Consider it the new 75.
