The TNG Relaunch - My version

I like your interplay between the three Romulans-the twisting and backpedaling is interesting to see. Worf will not be happy with Sela-I can't wait to see how he expresses his displeasure.

Say what you will, but, that Sela has more lives than a cat. It would be interesting to have the back story of how she survived her two foul ups on TNG. In the RSE on officer failing like her might have been asked to fall on the sword. You can only conclude that Sela's Romulan family must be a prominent one.

If you look at Sela's career on Memory Beta (except the video game part), you will see that she has had plenty of ups and downs, but always manages to reclaim her place. In the "official" TNGR she is the personal action arm of the praetor. I considered seeing her as such, but then I thought that she considers herself Romulan to the core and would hate Tal'Aura for being Shinzon's lapdog, especially since he caused the Remans to be liberated - by the Klingons of all people, the culture that she has tried several times to destroy. Since the fall of the empire, I saw her throwing her lot in with the most powerful group left, the Tal Shiar or Donatra. Seeing Donatra as a rival would mean that the Tal Shiar was her best bet for control, which is where we find her now.

Donatra doesn't seem to have an implacable hatred of Humans and the Federation. Tal'Aura would deal with the Feds if she had to do so. The Tal Shiar will also cooperate with the Feds when it suits their purposes. Sela must be feeling bitterness. BTW the stiory is great so far.

Chapter Twenty-Two

USS Enterprise
Cold Station Twelve
Stardate 57079.6

Commander Martin Madden watched the asteroid grow ever larger on the viewscreen as the starship approached. Picard had spoken directly to Admiral Janeway and received permission to enter the unnamed solar system, but he had been warned that the inhabitants of the station might not be receptive to uninvited guests. Since the Augment crisis of the twenty-second century all guests were thoroughly vetted and the station’s personnel were informed and given the choice to vote on whether this person was allowed to pass through their security. In the interests of expediency, however, Janeway had told Picard that he should do what he must do discover the truth behind the attacks on the Romulan border worlds, no matter where it led.

Madden was asked to sit in on the meeting with the Denobulan in charge of the station, a Doctor Kelos. The man was stocky, with an overbearing attitude and looked with disdain at everyone in the observation lounge with the exception of Doctor Crusher. The commander still wasn’t sure whether he was staying on as first officer or not, but for the moment he was sharing the duties with Worf, with the latter taking on the active roles while he was stuck dealing with the more mundane ones, like crew evaluations and the general administrative tasks. Picard was informing Kelos of his intention to make a full inventory of the facility to determine if anyone had taken anything in the last five years.

‘You can’t do that!’ Kelos replied angrily. ‘Much of what we work with is highly dangerous and many experiments are time sensitive.’

‘Commander Madden will not interfere with your experiments. His team will be taking inventory to make sure that nothing has been stolen.’

‘No one has stolen anything from this facility in two hundred years.’

Picard’s relatively genial attitude evaporated. ‘Doctor Kelos, thousands of people are dying on the Romulan border worlds because of a disease which has, as part of its genetic makeup, Augment DNA. There is currently only one place in the galaxy where such DNA exists and that is right here.’

Kelos smirked. ‘The Klingons still have a small stockpile.’

‘No, they don’t,’ Crusher interrupted. ‘I learned of their stockpile during the war and had it destroyed with Chancellor Gowron’s blessing. The only place it could have come from is here. Let us make sure that it is still here and you have nothing to worry about. Unless you know it’s missing?’

Kelos looked at Worf, Madden, T’Lana, Crusher, Picard and Battaglia, and then slumped in his chair. ‘One of my colleagues brought it to my attention some weeks ago, saying that some of the Augment embryos were missing.’

‘Who was it and what were they working on?’

‘Doctor Dorian was working on a way to revert the embryos to standard human norms so that they might be allowed to removed from this facility.’

Crusher raised an eyebrow, and sighed. ‘I thought I ordered that research banned when I was head of Starfleet Medical?’ she asked ‘We cannot take the chance. If even a trace of this augmented DNA remains, there could be another Khan.’

‘What if there’s another Bashir?’ Kelos countered. ‘The Augments represent a part of your past you’d rather forget, but they are part of your cultural history and you need to remember that.’

‘We do remember it, Doctor,’ Picard replied. ‘Humanity will never forget, but if you are working on banned research projects, then we need to make a more detailed inspection, don’t we?’

Kelos nodded. ‘I’ll have all the experiments stopped by the time you arrive,’ he said and stood to leave.

‘You’ll wait, and my people will accompany you,’ Picard told him. ‘Mister Battaglia, take him to the main shuttlebay and wait with him, have a full security detail join you. Commander Madden, I want you to lead this away team. Take whoever you need. If you need more people, let me know.’

‘Aye sir, I’d like Doctor Crusher to come along.’

Picard nodded. ‘That’s fine.’

‘I would like to bring one of my technicians along, she could use the experience.’

‘Her clearance isn’t high enough,’ Kelos muttered as he left with Battaglia.

Picard ignored him and turned to T’Lana. ‘You’ve been quiet, Counsellor, nothing to add?’

‘I believe that bullying these people into cooperating will not have the desired effect.’

Picard sighed. ‘The rest of you dismissed. Commander Madden, if you and T’Lana will stay a moment.’

‘Aye sir.’

‘I don’t have time to convince them that helping us is the only thing they can do, Counsellor. At least two of the doctors here have broken both Starfleet regulations and Federation laws, and we’ll take them into custody once our investigation is complete. If they have in any way directly or indirectly led to the deaths of the Kevrata and other cultures on the border worlds then they will be facing conspiracy charges as well.’

‘T’Lana’s eyebrows both rose almost into her forehead. ‘Captain, I believe that you are allowing your emotions to cloud your judgement. You have not yet found any evidence to suggest that the doctors here are responsible for the diseases being disseminated among the Romulan border worlds.’

‘Counsellor, Doctor Kelos has confessed to not informing Starfleet Medical that Augment embryos were missing and has also informed us that one of his doctors is working on a project banned by the former head of Starfleet Medical. Either one of these incidents alone is cause for an investigation and provides ample evidence for a Starfleet JAG. You are free to consult the JAG officer on board if you choose.’

T’Lana looked at Picard, then at Madden, and nodded. ‘Aye sir.’

‘Dismissed.’

Picard turned to Madden. ‘I’m not lacking in intelligence, Commander. I know you were placed here to watch me by Admiral Janeway and I’m letting you know now that I won’t tolerate misguided loyalties. Either you report to me, or to the Admiral. Which is it to be?’

Madden held back a sigh. ‘I report to you, sir.’

‘Good, now get over to that facility and let me know what you find. Bear in mind that I already have a first officer, and unless you can convince me that you will do better in that role, I will be returning him to that position.’

‘Captain, can I make a suggestion?’

‘Go ahead.’

‘I have seen it work on other vessels and wondered if you would be willing to split the position of security chief and tactical officer.’

‘That particular choice has been brought to my attention previously,’ Picard replied.

‘I would like to offer my services as your security chief.’

‘I thought you were an operations officer on the Talos?’

‘ I was, but I was considering a transfer to security before I was transferred to command.’

Picard nodded. ‘Alright, I’ll inform Battaglia that he is to return to the bridge. You will report to Commander Worf for this mission. Drop by the quartermaster for your new uniform. I’ll take care of the paperwork.’

‘Thank you, sir,’ Madden replied and quickly left the ready room.

He knew that he would be under less suspicion and it might give him the opportunity he needed to find out what was really happening on board, and how Picard was able to keep so any of his people year after year.

The irony here is that the answers to Madden's questions are right under his nose--all he has to do is open his eyes and his mind. Maybe he's taken the first step to doing both here--or maybe not...

Glad you found a use for Madden-cause your cutting room floor tends to be littered with corpses.;)

Interesting that someone got into one of the most secure facilities in Federation space....

You should give "Picard" that disease he got in "All Good Things" Have him deal with his health problem as he still stays the captain.

How about making Q a regular. Strip him of his powers like in "Deja Q" and this time take away his intelect. What would Q be like if he was truly ordinary might be a fun story to do.

You could also put a section 31 mole on the ship.

Maybe, no, and no. And what do you think of the story?

I got to read it. Is this the first story of your relauch series because I want to read it from the beginning. PLus I have only read one TNG relaunch book and that was "Restiance" so should I know something beforehand?

Resistance is the second book in the "official" TNG relaunch. I have read all four books and wasn't impressed, so I thought I could do better. This is my version.

Everything should be explained if you read the thread from the beginning. I have kept the same characters, for the most part, but taken the story in a different direction to that of the official line.

All you need is a familiarity with Nemesis. This takes place a few weeks later.

Enjoy

Guess what? You are doing better, much better! This stuff deserves to be published by Pocket Books.

(I lasted posted a message on TrekBBS in December 2007. Before that, it was during February 2005, then before that November 2002. So really, this is my 4th post in the last 5 years. I came out of hibernation to express my gratitude :) )

Just caught back up. Looking forward to seeing what's found on the station and the interaction with Madden and Worf.
