The timeship

I watched Future's End last night and this very question has been bothering me.

Also, even if Starling managed to capture the timeship somehow, wouldn't Braxton have had his phaser or something on him in order to go after Starling and retake his ship?

I mean, spending 30 years in close proximity to Chronowerx and NEVER BOTHERING to try to get your ship back seems sort of....wimpy. Also given that he had 30 some odd years, he should have attempted to construct a weapon of some kind.

The emergency transport, akin to ejection from a fighter plane, would have have happened in orbit or space. He could have materialized safely a hundred miles from where the aeon crashed purely because historically it was a deadzone... Although why the ship was allowed to survive when it is a massive temporal contaminant is moronic.

It's selfdestruct had to have failed?

Which means that Braxton wasn't intending to transport near a crash sight that was never supposed to have happened, and it might have been months before he noticed that something was up and that he had to save his future.

He should have destroyed all his advanced tech as well.

If he really wanted to adhere to the temporal Prime Directive, then he should have killed himself.

Of course, a failed suicide attempt could have wound him up in that loony bin we heard so much about.

All he needed for patents would have been a slide out computer bank.
He asks it how to hack itself and it complies--better than giving someone a replicator with all the instructions.

If his tech is too good, the government steps in, and takes it.

He had to figure out shitty tech just a little bit better than what's on he market, and then roll out slightly better tech over the next few decades.

Notice how Starling had to go to the future to get more tech, when he hadn't sold the holodeck we saw that he had to anyone as yet?

I don't think he really had to go to the future. I think he was obsessed with what else was out there, with the incredible lure of doing something no one else could do and coming back with things no one else had.

He lied? He told a lie that forced Janeway to be his enemy?

JANEWAY: You'd destroy an entire city? You don't care about the future, you don't care about the present. Does anything matter to you, Mister Starling?
STARLING: The betterment of mankind.
JANEWAY: It doesn't look like that.
STARLING: Why do you think I want to go to the future, a vacation?
JANEWAY: To get more technology. That's why you're launching the timeship.
STARLING: I've cannibalised the ship itself as much as I can. There's nothing left to base a commercial product on.
JANEWAY: And the future is just waiting to be exploited.

How odd.

Is Starling more stupid than the evil bad guy or is he more evil than stupid. That is the question. Guess most viewers would call him alittle both. The ep. tried to protect is image of being another bad guy. Nobody got hurt bad, the doctor recieved a gift the Mobile emitter, Starling thought he was doing good, and Janeway hit off on him if he wasn't so dumb. Dumb and dumber.

I must admit I have always wondered that myself. The other thing or point how was he not only able to get it off the mountain. But how did the US government not stop him. Really they would have had the whole place shut down within hours. The other thing I always wondered, how did a hippy and a hippy from 60s understand 29th century technology?

1. Maybe the US government is behind Starling They watched him take it, they investigated what it was, they enabled him to exploit it and the exploited both him and it themselves. He's the frontrunner pawn.

2. You know how computers and tech are just more and more "for dummies" in their painstaking explanations? Well the 29th century tech has explanations in it for children. This is what Daniels told us in ENT, little kids are playing around with timelines. So when Starling accessed his first introductory panel some kind future human was ready to walk him through a hand holding session in the children's starter program.

In an old way that makes sense. Today you get programs and software that will literally walk you through how to use it, so why wouldn't they have it in the 29th century.
But wouldn't you think expecially with a ship that can travel through time you wouldn't have a single person interface to stop things like happening?

Or a failsafe on the thingamabob which was supposed to be used before a time shift to prevent the destruction of a planet- just like our brake/clutch pedal has to be engaged before starting the car.

Well who knows how much pissing around Braxton was doing with the ship. He may have disabled failsafes for some personal jaunt he was doing on the sly.

And speaking of which, what actually happened to him? Did he crawl out of the crashed ship and run away?

Ah right. I wonder where he beamed to? Probably he was close, and then he hid the ship with branches and then took off on foot to gather resources. But the crash was seen by Starling who hiked up to the ship.

"Emergency" implies extreme distance. Emergency might even mean that the ships computer just threw him at the planet and he wasn't called into the decision making process.

Braxton may have beamed out seconds before the windshield cracked open, but ten minutes before the ship crashed into the planet, which means that Braxton could have materilized thousands of miles from the crash site, and he's lucky that the Aeon was smart enough not to teleport him to the moon.
