When lots of fans say, "Now that's more like it!", like there was something wrong with the previous iteration...

ST-TMP is still my favourite Trek movie despite being told by "true fans" that ST II is so much better. Ditto Season Three of "Picard". I am loving it, but I really enjoyed the two previous seasons.

I can't see anyone at Paramount taking any notice of a fan petition insisting on a certain showrunner. I recall a fan campaign to put the Star Trek legacy into Majel Barrett's hands after Gene passed away.

Structurally, PICARD season 3 does have more in common with DISCOVERY: streaming format, serialized, doesn't need to hit the reset button and thus stagnate the characters over the span of years, produced in 2020s, aired after production was fully complete, doesn't need to fit US FCC regulations for broadcast over the air...

Content wise, it may not exactly be TNG season 8, but it does reflect a natural evolution of Berman-era Trek, specifically from the later seasons of DS9 and the final two seasons of ENT. Visually, it has the LCARS, ships with familiar exterior designs, the interior of the Titan looks like a natural evolution of the Enterprise-E and Voyager. Plot wise, it is deeply intertwined with TNG/DS9/VGR and continues those storythreads forward while also contributing to the preestablished lore. Terry Matalas was involved in Berman Trek for several years, and is essentially Brannon Braga's protégé.

Whereas DISCOVERY is very much a rupture with 1966-2005 Trek, is much closer in tone and visual identity to the Abramsverse, and at least in its first two seasons doesn't exactly fit well with what had already been established.

Nah, it fits fine. Not seeing much "Abrams" in DISCO. Especially Season One's Fullerness.

I could understand if the people that really liked DISCOVERY/PICARD S1 were hating PICARD S3 as much as people that are now liking the third season iteration disliked DISCOVERY/PICARD S1 in the past.

PICARD season 3 seems to be appealing to those that liked DISCOVERY/PICARD S1 (minus the concern over writing out Soji, Elnor, Rios, Jurati) and those that disliked DISCOVERY/PICARD S1 (minus the concerns of Picard still being an android etc).

Terry has said he hopes the season appeals to everyone.

Honestly? The biggest thing that the Matalas disciples seem to bring up regularly is the visuals, whether that be the graphics or the ships.

And of course, there’s connective tissue with the Berman era. I’d argue that connective tissue is similar between TOS and Disco/SNW. And the Berman era and both Prodigy and LDS.

But honestly, the general storytelling style is the same between Disco, SNW and yes, Picard. Even season three. You have more of a focus on character. You have real emotions. You have, dare I say it conflict.

So at the end of the day, it seems that really the only thing the Matalas disciples are getting with Picard season 3 that they weren’t getting before is some LCARS and relatively familiar ship designs.

As I always say, Star Trek is different things to different people. But honestly, if that’s what’s keeping you from enjoying some of the really solid new Trek, I am sorry.

Because it's not that different from Season 1.

It's night and day for many, far beyond just the production design

Only due to cognitive dissonance in a way.

I think it would make more sense to know what the next (if any) Star Trek series is going to be about before they pick a showrunner. Terry Matalas has his strengths and weakness’, it would need to be the right show for him and his style. For example, @Danja may very well do a better job on a Seven of Nine spin-off show than Terry would, or @Therin of Andor may do better on something based on TOS. @F. King Daniel would do something amazing JJ-Verse orientated I am sure? I just don’t think that it is right voting for something by Terry Matalas before the season is over as we do not know his endgame.

With Disco being cancelled, it should free up people from THAT show.

I'd say the show not featuring a Gay male couple or the lead character not being a Black woman who challenges authority would be up there with LCARS and familiar ship designs for some people.

It was created to pacify the Disco bashers.

They got their show and they hate it already ("WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH TREK? IT'S DONE GONE WOKE!" )

Picard Season 3 feels more like the third season of that show vs TNG S8 (like people hyped it up to be) but the key difference is that...this season is well written with good character work. Seasons 1-2 (to me at least) very much were not.

Anything below 50k signatures is going to be pretty much ignored by the Paramount/CBS Exo's.

This would be lucky to even get 15K and that's not enough folks for them to pay attention.

It's not though. It's "Kurtzman Trek" using TNG characters and TOS movie callbacks.
