How many of you really want "STAR TREK DISCOVERY" to fail? How many of you?
I can’t speak for anyone else but personally I don’t want it to fail. I hope DSC is very successful and spawns many other Star Trek spinoffs.
I *would* like DSC to improve in the storytelling department, and I’d have preferred it to be more suggestive of the overall aesthetic of TOS, but wanting it to fail would go against wanting more Star Trek on tv for me.
Are any of you upset that the series' lead is portrayed by another woman? Are any of you especially upset that this series is led by an African-American woman?
I can’t wrap my head around asking this question let alone anyone for whom the answer might be “yes”. But since you ask (and having seen some comments on other websites I understand why you do ask) no and no.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like the character of Michael Burnham. But that’s because I find her self righteous, arrogant, uninteresting, and uninspiring. None of that has anything to do with the fact that the actress portraying Michael happens to be a female poc.
Overall? DSC needs to worry less about how it’s coming across (‘woke’, ‘progressive’, etc. - those qualities are a given since it’s a Star Trek show which, by definition, should strive to be woke and progressive because that’s the future that we want to aim for) and focus more on telling engaging, compelling stories. Obviously mileage will vary on how engaging and compelling s1 was. For me, it wasn’t particularly. But (as I’ve said before in other threads) I remain hopeful that it will improve in s2.
Personally I wouldn’t worry too much about whether or not there are people out there who may want DSC to fail. I’m sure there were folks who wanted TNG to fail. Looking at some of TNG s1 it’s not hard to see why
One of my worries about discussing DSC in such a manner is that it’s potentially easy to lump in anyone who questions elements of DSC or criticises the show in any way as a “hater” or “TOS fanboy” or whatever. There seems to be an underlying assumption from time to time that things like criticising DSC’s aesthetic means that “you want it to look like the 60s and you’re an idiot - it’s not going to look like 50 years ago stupid”, or that thinking Michael is not a particularly likeable character must mean that you’re intolerant and only dislike her *because* she’s a female poc.
If we could try and take each argument at face value and on its own merits a little more rather than assume people want DSC to fail or that people want a ST Continues-style aesthetic or that people “hate” Michael or the show or whatever for the most simple and obvious reasons, we might avoid some of the negativity that tends to crop up.
Yes, that is starfleet.
(I already hate myself for ending this post like that)
