The stupid s**t some people TRY to make you buy with Lottery winnings

Re: The stupid s**t some people TRY to make you buy with Lottery winni

Why would I want to alienate all my friends and family, and go huddle in a missile silo caressing my money? I WANT to be able to help my friends and family. Money is not an end to itself. I would set up a philanthropic trust to help people. No one needs that much money for themselves. :vulcan:

I never said you'd have to hide out forever. Just disappear for 6 months while you get everything settled. After that, you can try to go back to your old life. Chances are good it will have changed a lot, though. You'll also find out real quick which friends and family member actually care about you and which ones just want cash. That's why I advocated the idea of telling everyone at the start that you aren't a bank.

That being said, you can act like a business. If someone needs money from you, you can give them a chance to earn their pay. For example, I'll need a house-sitter for my new house while I'm on Active Duty. I'd happily hire my best friend and his wife to act as my housekeepers. They care for the place while I'm gone in the Army and I give them $100,000 a year to essentially live in my house. They can still have day jobs too, if they want. They won't even have to worry about the bills and real estate taxes. The lawyers will handle that for them.

well, if its over 20 million, put about 10 million in a bank account, then invest the rest in a company like SpaceX. If it were in the 100's of millions, sock about 50 million to live comfortably, then form my own company like SpaceX, hopefully with a complementary product.

Also, having money by myself would not be fun. I would spread my money around to VERY close friends and immediate family. Probably things like wiping out debt my friends have and making sure my parents are comfortable.

Be careful. If word gets around that you're willing to pay other people's bills, you'll never get a moment's peace.

Anyone remember that guy who won like 250 million? He was already a millionaire from construction if I remember correctly. Well this guy dumped all sorts of stuff on his granddaughter and she ended up overdosing on drugs. The last I heard about him was he got robbed of like $300,000 while he was in a strip club. I think somebody broke into his truck and stole it.

Yes, I remember. Last I heard, he was fighting with people in court over the money for some reason. I want to say he was divorcing his wife but, I can't recall if that's true or not.

Yeah that was pretty much my reaction. I'd rather have people taking advantage of my good fortune than live the way the OP seems to want to.

I've read all of the posts in this thread.

I look forward to having these kinds of problems in the future.

You mean the one where you'd make your family and friends work for you instead of giving them some money because it's a nice thing to do for people you care about? Yeah, you came across much better in that one.

Re: The stupid s**t some people TRY to make you buy with Lottery winni

I think the easiest way to deal with gargantuan lottery winnings would be to hand them all over to an indisputably worthy charity. Your family and friends may be in need of money, but they'll have a hard time arguing they need it more than, say, crippled children in sub-saharan Africa.

You get to look (and feel) good, and people won't bother you.

But yeah, the best way to deal with these problems is not to play the lottery in the first place.

Um, yea, right. That's why I play, for the humanitarian aspects, sure.

I have a high tolerance for say "NO". Besides, I am sure some of the investment schemes could be quite entertaining to listen to.

What good is the money if my friends can't share in my good fortunes?

Well, most people play for the feeling the chance to win money gives them. The opportunity to dream big, maybe even an entertainment-filled family night watching the numbers being drawn on tv.

They don't play for the actual money itself. If they did, then they probably wouldn't play in the first place.

you could hold your own Dragons Den

Re: The stupid s**t some people TRY to make you buy with Lottery winni

Tick the no publicity box, and keep your mouth shut.

That about sums up what I'd do. Though (depending on how much I won) I would occasionally have to fight the temptation of hiring a lawyer to anonymously grant a healthy sum to my fellow wage-slave coworkers of my former workplace just to screw over my boss. If the majority of the employees were empowered to walk en masse if they wanted to, then that's much less crap my dear former-manager can pull if he doesn't want to be telling corporate the next day about how he managed to single-handedly render the store inoperable.

It'd be a nice way to help people out and also get sweet, sweet revenge.

Yeah, this is probably about what I'd do. I'd spend some of it helping out friends\family, some on myself (I'd probably buy a nice condo or something and save a small nest egg to live off if I need to) and then donate the rest to charity.

Re: The stupid s**t some people TRY to make you buy with Lottery winni

I work in the media and my first rule would be screw the media. I would never even give my employer an interview. What are they going to do, fire me? big deal. They wouldn't see me after I get everything confirmed in any case.

I'd give my immediate family members enough to get out of debt and make sure my mother never has worries. I am not close to most of my family and many could get lost as far as I care. My mom, sister and neice is it from my side.. my wife's family has always been dirt poor but have never asked us for a thing - they would be rewarded.

I'd also take are of some co-workers who have put up with crap with me during he last five years.

I have one favored charity that would be very happy as well.

But even if gave every one of them $1-million each, it would be less than $15 million. Realistically, It would be about half that.

I also am not a spender, so I'd likely invest and live off the interest. Then my will would be very careful not to screw up my survivors.

but I don't play the lotto, so it won't matter.

CAN I REMAIN ANONYMOUS WHEN I HIT THE JACKPOT? All but three states (DE, KS, ND) have laws that require the lottery to release the name and city of residence to anyone who asks. One state (SC) will keep your name secret if you request it, but if someone files a Freedom of Information Act request, you may have to file a plea with the judge to deny it. Another state (OK) now has a law that allows you to claim in a trust and to keep your name from the press (though the lottery will run checks on you). Photos and press conferences are always up to you. Most of the time, it is advisable to get it over with the press so that you don't have one or more reporters following you around to get that "exclusive" interview. A few more lotteries may work with you on setting up a trust or other partnership. You or your representative should contact the lottery for the details after you win.

Re: The stupid shit some people TRY to make you buy with Lottery winni

claim you gave 80% you net winnings to an un-named charity

I wouldn't be pretending; I really would give away a lot. If it were millions, I would do something like this:

40% to charity
10% to my godchildren
40% invested
10% to play with

That is some kind of fucked up. Why would they do that?
Because most Americans are a cynical bunch and we like transparency. If they didn't announce the winner(s), they could just be making stuff up and pocketing 100% of the revenue. :shifty:

Who's to say they aren't? You know any millinaires via the lottery personally?

What would I do with multi millions? Well, certainly not going to live lavishly. I just want a nice, decent sized house and things that work properly, and not have to worry about all my money going to repair bills and bills in general.

Certain family/relatives will get some money, but those who were not so nice ... will have to keep their 9 to 5 job.

Probably donate some to FilmScoreMonthly.com for their contiued efforts, and of course some to the Jerry Goldsmith Film Scoring Scholarship.

I'll still do things pretty much the same until I get projects in order. I'll still wake up everyday and exerise, still wear sweat pants and a shirt and fuzzy slippers. I'll still shop at places like Wal-Mart and Dollar General.

But I will NOT sit on my ass and sleep all day (though I may do that for a period just for the hell of it). I'll start up my own little film/TV production company and start trying to make things for air. I'll also, alternatively, start taking proper music classes and eventualyl try to aim for a film scoring one.

The idea of giving them a job is to make sure they don't want to mooch off of their new rich friend/relative. It might also keep them honest too.

Be careful. If word gets around that you're willing to pay other people's bills, you'll never get a moment's peace.

As entertaining as listening to a sales pitch can be, I still prefer that they just send something to my P.O. Box.

The chances are good that the job would quit on you if you didn't leave. Many people in your firm are going to have the 'He's rich, why does he keep someone else from getting a job' mentality and turn hostile towards you. Therefore, quitting might be the best thing to do.

That's why Rule#1 specifically said to use the media to tell everyone you aren't a bank. It gets the exclusive interview out of the way and helps you get your 'your problems are yours' message out to the world. I love killing two proverbial birds with one stone. :)

Re: The stupid s**t some people TRY to make you buy with Lottery winni

There was a huge article in Sports Illustrated about professional athletes and all the ways they lose money. Usually they go from having little money to being multi-millionaires and like that they suddenly have friends and family coming out of the woodwork hitting them up for money. They all want to be the next Magic Johnson (successful business venture outside of sports) and get easily scammed (would you like to invest in a raft that goes under your furniture and inflates in case of a flood?). Often times they let unqualified family members handle the money. They live a lavish lifestyle while the paycheck's coming in and are completely unprepared for life after sports. And divorce is probably the biggest one.
