The Starship enteprise a character?

Tombfyre

Commander
Red Shirt
Do you think that the enterprise is just a setting or is it treated like a character in the series? I believe that its treated more like a character but my fellow IT people here at the office say its just a setting and thats it.

What do you think?

That's in concordance with general navy trades. Ask any sailor, their ship was a character with its stories and legends, bad habits, even a soul. This is the flagship, the one with the most legends, the most stories. It defintely IS quite a character.

I would agree with that. Through the writing and especially the characters attitudes towards it The Enterprise very easily became a character as important to the overall scope of the show as any living character.

I think that was definitely true in TOS. With Kirk and Scotty as her biggest fans, the Enterprise was truly a character in her own right, IMO. TNG and ENT surely had their moments, too.

McCoy probably said it best in "Encounter At Farpoint," though...

Enterprise was Kirk's tue love wasn't she? (That and his duty to the crew)
