The Star Trek reboot series that never was

Looking up Star Trek at Wikipedia, I came across a link to a pdf detailing plans to reboot Star Trek in ’04 near the time of Enterprise’s demise. It’s a fascinating read:

http://bztv.typepad.com/newsviews/files/ST2004Reboot.pdf

Here’s the short version: After discovering a message hidden in the genetic code of Humans, Klingons, Vulcans and the rest, Kirk and co.’s Enterprise launches on a five-year mission to find the common ancestor to all the humanoid races in the galaxy (this is the show’s new ‘prime directive’ and is inexplicably kept secret from the rest of the crew). There’s also stuff about an abandoned ancient city (the first of many Stargate-sounding things). Some episodes were to be remakes of famous TOS ones, including one where the Doomsday Machine was to be a relic of this ancient race (and no doubt the Guardian of Whenever, too).

With the full-on big-budget Trek remake film due in about 90 days, this reads kinda like the series to follow (even though it won’t be), a bit like the way Stargate had its spin-off series SG-1 in the 90’s.

It’s not perfect – this new mission has been done before. It was done in a mediocre TNG episode, as well as lots and lots in Stargate SG1 and Atlantis (with their ‘Ancients’). And who’s really gonna want to watch a Trekified rehash? If Trek returns, it shouldn’t be retreading someone else’s ideas (err…aside from Gene-o’s, obviously. But better!)

But it’s still an interesting series-that-never-was. And there’s a fairly good chance that Star Trek will return to our TV’s in the next few years (even if the film fails horribly there’s still all those nice Apple-sponsored Enterprise interiors laying about, and it’s more likely to happen when the sets, outfits and props are already there!), so me might see something along these lines in a year or two. Let’s just hope they leave the behind-the-times TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT people at home. Star Trek needs fresh blood! And the return of Mr Arex!

I for one would have liked to see that. I think JMS had a great understanding of what made TOS so good.

Having said that, I couldn't be more hyped by what Abrams is doing with his version of Star Trek. ;)

Unsurprisingly I think this sounds like crap too. B5 was ok, but he had some really weird ideas for his version of TOS.

Hmm, I can't say I'm totally convinced I would've enjoyed that. Is that definitely legit?

More often than not, I've preferred what we did get over Trek that-never-was. For instance Phase II or the initial plots for TMP, TUC or FC.

Then again, I'm in a very small minority who might not have minded seeing The Beginning as a straight-to-DVD feature or something - if only to give a bit of decent closure to Enterprise.

I remember reading this a while back. I don't think his ideas were total crap. The idea of the 'mother race' seeding all of the other races from TNG's 'The Chase' coupled with the TOS idea of the 'Preservers' and Sargon's people makes sense, and is something I've long held in my personal canon.

That said, some of these themes feel a bit too B5-ish, and I don't care for the show being about finding these ancient people and their relics.

It was an awful, derivative idea.

And it was never actually pitched to Paramount. The authors prepared it but did not submit it.

I'd say that Trek dodged a bullet, but that would be presuming that the rifle was even pointed in the direction of the barn.

Thank god they didn't do this. It is an okay idea for one episode, but basing a whole series around it? No thanks.

The TNG episode about this subject wasn't even that great, and in my opinion rather silly.

I think I have some faint recollection of some plan for Trek in 2005 that was going to be set in about 2017 () and be about some young astronauts or the barest beginnings of Trek or something. I may have seen it on AICN or here. Does anybody remember that?

I read that proposal back when Enterprise was cancelled and didn't like it at all because TOS wasn't about epic story arcs or dark plot-twists and I don't think it should be. I'm still undecided about JJ's reboot but at least he seems to have some understanding about what TOS was all about.
