Looking up Star Trek at Wikipedia, I came across a link to a pdf detailing plans to reboot Star Trek in ’04 near the time of Enterprise’s demise. It’s a fascinating read:

Here’s the short version: After discovering a message hidden in the genetic code of Humans, Klingons, Vulcans and the rest, Kirk and co.’s Enterprise launches on a five-year mission to find the common ancestor to all the humanoid races in the galaxy (this is the show’s new ‘prime directive’ and is inexplicably kept secret from the rest of the crew). There’s also stuff about an abandoned ancient city (the first of many Stargate-sounding things). Some episodes were to be remakes of famous TOS ones, including one where the Doomsday Machine was to be a relic of this ancient race (and no doubt the Guardian of Whenever, too).
With the full-on big-budget Trek remake film due in about 90 days, this reads kinda like the series to follow (even though it won’t be), a bit like the way Stargate had its spin-off series SG-1 in the 90’s.
It’s not perfect – this new mission has been done before. It was done in a mediocre TNG episode, as well as lots and lots in Stargate SG1 and Atlantis (with their ‘Ancients’). And who’s really gonna want to watch a Trekified rehash? If Trek returns, it shouldn’t be retreading someone else’s ideas (err…aside from Gene-o’s, obviously. But better!)
But it’s still an interesting series-that-never-was. And there’s a fairly good chance that Star Trek will return to our TV’s in the next few years (even if the film fails horribly there’s still all those nice Apple-sponsored Enterprise interiors laying about, and it’s more likely to happen when the sets, outfits and props are already there!), so me might see something along these lines in a year or two. Let’s just hope they leave the behind-the-times TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT people at home. Star Trek needs fresh blood! And the return of Mr Arex!
