The Star Trek Encyclopedia getting first update since 1999!

The animated series should have been included. This book should have had the same motto as the NY Times. You don't have to read all but its nice to know its all there. Also it is already outdated with the new movie and upcoming new series. They should consider releasing an annual yearbook with added updates just like Encyclopedia Britannica used to publish back in the day.
There is no reason to not include TAS.
I can deal with it not including Star Trek Beyond and Star Trek 2017 television series for obvious reasons. A supplemental book to add to this eventually would make sense.

And Amazon.ca has it at $123, which is down from $166 the last time I checked.

I admit I never tend to pre-order things. I know Amazon will guarantee you the lowest price between the day you pre-order and release day. But... does it ever happen that they then lower it even further on the day after release, so that you're out of the guarantee period?

The main reason I want to look at this is to see the updated timeline. I'm really interested to see if there are any surprising updates there.

I am hopeful that an updated Chronology might be another project, perhaps if the Encyclopedia sells well enough.

Rarely, but it does occasionally happen. On the few times that it's happened to one of my pre-orders, I just contacted Amazon's customer service dept. via email or phone and they refunded me the difference (so long as the price drop occurred within a week or so of the intial release).

They understand the issue and want to keep the customer satisfied, so the whole process is hassle-free.

Big article on the Encyclopedia update at Trekcore:

http://www.trekcore.com/blog/2016/08/new-star-trek-encyclopedia-details-revealed-at-stlv/

Thought this part was interesting:

The Okudas revealed some additional detail about how the project was tackled this time around – for example, Memory Alpha wasn't consulted in any of their new research. "Any mistakes have to be our mistakes," said Denise, who took the lead on the new round of Trek research. "We go with what's on-screen as gospel."

I hope they didn't miss out on any insights by avoiding Memory Alpha. OTOH, I'm looking forward to comparing these two secondary sources.

Hmm... the Enterprise-J gets a semi-official class name: Universe class. I don't think I've heard that one before. I'm kinda sad that it conflicts with Serpents Among the Ruins, though...

In the "Ships of the Galaxy" spread, they've conflated the Raptor class and the 22nd century Bird of Prey. Those were two separate ship designs.

You can zoom in on the text and read it.

Universe class has floated through the web for years. This statement is, for me, probably the most important one in the book. Doug Drexler coined it. It makes sense of the ship's scale - large and capable of intergalactic travel. Hope STO picks up the name now, too.

When is the book out? Can't wait to update Memory Beta.

Amazon shows October 18th.

I was under the impression that the Kelvin Universe would be a separate section to the prime timeline of the book. Kelvin universe cooties!

I think STO uses the name too.

I wish there was a Digital release, I want some good quality images of those patches.

I skimmed through the Kirk entry. Odd that the Okudas are still sticking with their strange assumptions that Kirk became a Lieutenant before graduating the Academy and that he served on the Republic while still a cadet (Which completely ignores that the Republic incident happened "some years" after when Kirk & Ben Finney became friends), but at least they note David Goodman's more sensible suggestions from The Autobiography of James T. Kirk. And I'm at a total loss as to how TMP can take place in 2271 when the 5YM ended in 2270 according to a canon reference in VOY.

The layout looks really nice, though.
