the spy/assassin genre resurgence

Another spy show.

Like Sarah Connor, the new project, titled The Asset, is an action show with a female lead. It is described as a character-driven drama set in the New York office of the CIA, which centers on a female agent.

"New York office of the CIA?" Why does Hollywood keep insisting that the CIA should be working domestically. Maybe they do, but I like to think otherwise! :rommie: At least Covert Affairs and Chuck keep up the pretense that domestic spy work has to be super top secret or they will all get into a lot of trouble. I'd hate to see Chuck dragged before a Congressional oversight committee.

Or the late CHAOS where they set up the new Operative Martinez telling him that they were an illegal branch of the CIA but setting him up for blackmail.

What is worse the domestic CIA Agent/Operative or the NSA Agent? Maybe the OCB of the FBI

untitled CIA drama project in dev. by Fox & Paul Greengrass

is described as a high-stakes character-based drama centering on the young assistants of high-ranking officers in the U.S. Intelligence community. The show takes place within the walls of the CIA, as well as the DIA, NSA, FBI and the intelligence components at the White House.

Feature director Paul Greengrass has joined Fox’s untitled CIA drama project from writer Joe Weisberg (Falling Skies), Imagine TV and 20th Century Fox TV. This marks the first foray into U.S. television for British director-writer Greengrass, who will serve as an executive producer on the CIA drama alongside Brian Grazer and Weisberg.

I hear that he may also direct the potential pilot subject to availability.
That would be interesting as a first time TV work from Greengrass.

This is a resurgence when Fox needs a replacement for 24.

Is there anything sf/f about Noir?
It would appear not based on the wikipedia. Only realism-based.

Unlike its spiritual successor Madlax, Noir is mainly about reality's criminal underworld while Madlax is about supernatural events.
Noir was followed by two spiritual successors, Madlax [2002 anime] and El Cazador de la Bruja [anime starting 2007. Together, these series constitute a trilogy exploring the "girls-with-guns" genre.

Bee Train also did Requiem for the Phantom as well which also features a female assassin as one of the main characters.

Another spy series - The Americans on FX.
FX has greenlighted its next pilot, The Americans, a period drama created/executive produced by Joe Weisberg (Falling Skies) and executive produced by Graham Yost, showrunner of FX’s drama series Justified. The project centers on two KGB spies posing as Americans in suburban Washington DC in the early 1980s. The arranged marriage of Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings grows more passionate and genuine by the day, but is constantly tested by the escalation of the Cold War and the intimate, dangerous and darkly funny relationships they must maintain with a network of spies and informants under their control. Complicating their relationship further is Phillip’s growing sense of affinity for America’s values and way of life and the couple’s two children who know nothing about their parents’ true identity.

Eh, doesn't thill me. Setting it in the 1950s or earlier would be more interesting.

And while I'm here, yet another show has pulled the "CIA working domestically" schitck. If I said which one, that would constitute a spoiler, but if you saw it, you probably had the same shark-jumping mental flash I did. :rommie:

Ali Larter just landed the starring role in Fox’s promising spy drama pilot: http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/02/15/ali-larter/

Larter, who appeared in Resident Evil: Afterlife and played Niki Sanders on the NBC superhero drama, has been cast in The Asset.

The show is described as a character-driven drama set in the CIA’s New York City station. Larter plays Anna King, a photojournalist well known for her photographs of “hot spots” around the world. But her real work is for the CIA; she is a globe-trotting “Human Intel Specialist,” working in the field under journalist cover.

The project is from writer Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) and is produced by 20th Century Fox TV.

Bradley Whitford also cast in The Asset: http://www.deadline.com/2012/02/bradley-whitford-to-co-star-in-fox-drama-pilot-the-asset/

Whitford will play Leo, the Station Chief of the New York City CIA who is King’s biggest supporter.

They film everything in Canada you would think someone will have the guts to base a CIA agent in Canada or anywhere outside of the USA

It's especially weird to put a CIA station in New York, since, legally, the CIA is supposed to be all about foreign intelligence operations, and it's the FBI that's supposed to handle domestic counter-intelligence...

^ 24 basically ignored that for 7 of its 8 seasons*. CTU, for which Jack worked, was a branch of the CIA but covered domestic terrorism.

*In S7, CTU had been closed down and the FBI basically stood in for them for a season. CTU was back the following season, once again dealing with domestic terrorism.

Jamie Chung has joined Fox’s drama pilot The Asset.

The project, written and executive produced by Josh Friedman and directed by Neil Burger, centers on Anna King (Ali Larter), a remarkably gifted globe-trotting photographer with a secret life: she a CIA field operative. Chung, will play a polygraph expert with the CIA who administers a confrontational polygraph to King that immediately puts her on the wrong side of King’s temper and attention.

That seemed to be the case in season two, but by season four CTU was being funded by the Defense Department. Best not to think too hard about these things, though, because the writers obviously had no idea (how was a Senator of all people responsible for authorizing overseas operations, again?).

^ Not just in Season 2. In season 1, they talked about David Palmer not being a fan of 'the (Central Intelligence) Agency.'

I think the oversight thing may have been that Palmer headed the Senate's intelligence committee or something like that. But you're right, best not to overthink it.

Angela Bassett & Julian McMahon To Co-Star In Fox’s Karyn Usher Spy Pilot

Angela Bassett and Nip/Tuck alum Julian McMahon are in final negotiations to co-star in Fox’s untitled Karyn Usher drama pilot. Written by Usher and directed by Brett Ratner, the project centers on Jane Forsythe (Saxon Sharbino), the orphaned 14-year-old daughter of a CIA operative who encounters a mysterious rogue agent (McMahon) who serves as her surrogate father and professional mentor in the spy world. Bassett will play the calculating and political director of the CIA who takes Jane under her wing.

Hamish Linklater To Co-Star In ‘The Asset’, Rick Schroder Cast In Karyn Usher Pilot

Hamish Linkalter is in final negotiations to play the male lead opposite Ali Larter in Fox’s drama pilot The Asset. Linklater will play her handler, a CIA-turned-case manager.

NYPD Blue alum Rick Schroder has joined another Fox/20th TV drama pilot, the untitled Karyn Usher project. Written by Usher and directed by Brett Ratner, the project centers on Jane Forsythe (Saxon Sharbino), the orphaned 14-year-old daughter of a CIA operative (Schroder) who encounters a mysterious rogue agent (Julian McMahon) who serves as her professional mentor in the spy world.

and last week's update:
FX is continuing to bolster its drama lineup, on Thursday giving spy drama The Americans a 13-episode order. The series will begin production in October and premiere in early 2013.

The Americans is a period drama about the arranged marriage of two KGB spies posing as Americans in suburban Washington, D.C., during the Reagan era. The series stars Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys and Noah Emmerich. The show will be executive produced by creator/showrunner Joe Weisberg and Justified EP Graham Yost.
Wow a period 1980s TV series. Very cool twist them not being American spies. Ah yes the cold war.
