"The Soul Key" German cover

And as usual I think it's pretty bad, even though it's definitely one of the better and more ambitious covers they have done. I just still don't like the jarring combination of only slightly altered photographic elements with painted ones, the colors are really tacky, and their tendency to desperately fill space with collages shows up again here.

That said, the US cover's execution is worse.

Cross Cult really needs to share their cover artist with Pocket Books.

Pocket has talented artists (Cliff Nielsen, John Picacio when he doesn't let his color schemes run rampant...). They just need to allow/ask for more intricate designs.

Martin Frei, the artist doing it for CC, also had some really bad covers, to be honest I don't really see him having a better hit/miss ration than the US artists.

Exhibit A and B (two abysmal drafts for the German version of Excalibur: Rennaissance CC posted recently)

(And to have all recently released covers in one place: They also posted a draft for their version of New Frontier: Dark Allies).

Wow. I never thought that the cover design for the U.S. release of The Soul Key was very good, but this just puts it to shame.

I actually quite like the Rennaissance one. It's pretty stupid, but something about it just seems to match up well with New Frontier. It's like how Peter David writes a lame joke but somehow rather than groaning you genuinely smile because the tone of the book as a whole just makes it...satisfying. :) Those pictures make me think, without sarcasm, "that's dumb. I love it. Great work!"

Looking through Memory Beta I see that Nielsen has done some great stuff. In fact pretty much every cover they have on his page is one of my favorites.

:techman:Wow!I really like this cover wiht Illiana Ghemor on the cover.I like this German coverart alot more than the coverart on my copy of soulkey.
