His role as Gurney Halleck in the 1984 Dune was also like that, IMHO.
He keeps saying that he was the wrong actor who was cast and that David Lynch didn't even want him in the movie. The paycheck did help, though, of course - and filming Dune brought him to new places, so, not all was lost.
