The Sing-Off Season 5

I was worried that NBC would once again cancel The Sing-Off after last season's poor ratings. Thankfully, its going to come back but this year it is no longer a pure acapella competition :(

As stated on their website, they are holding auditions next month for any musical groups. This time, the rules state "Instruments and backing tracks ARE allowed but not required". So I guess the show's turning from pure acapella into a group-centric singing competition.

Also, here's some Sing-Off related news...
2 Sing-Off groups have been confirmed as competitors against the Barden Bellas in Pitch Perfect 2. They are... last season's Filharmonic and... PENTATONIX!

Well, that guts the show for me. I watch it pretty much ONLY for the a cappella aspect. No point watching if they're allowing any garage band, karaoke bar team or college drum corps to compete. Might as well stage a competition between teams playing hockey, soccer and baseball.

I guess they must be trying to incorporate more Glee-ness into the show, but just like Glee they're going to fail at it IMO. This shouldn't be an MMA competition.

I don't think the new rule is intended to allow bands to participate. If I read the new rule correctly, it is intended to allow a cappella groups to mix in electronic effects or add an occasional instrument to their performance. Even Pentatonix has added a Cello to some of their songs.

An example is season 3's Sonos, who crashed out pretty early because they were not allowed to use their effects pedals. In fact they mentioned this disadvantage in their very first performance on The Sing-Off. And here's a video of them performing the exact same song with their signature effects pedals.

Ah, fair enough - after all, the Nylons managed with a drum machine for decades before vocal percussion became hardcore. Still, I'm of the opinion that proper a cappella should not need any add-ins as you describe, so this will have lost some appeal for me regardless.

Street Corner Symphony just uploaded a video to youtube, its amazing :)

I just found this thread. I had no idea we were getting another season. Yay!

I was searching the board for Pentatonix references because I just listened to their new Christmas album & loved it and wanted to gush. :D

Well, I think there's only the three of us in this forum who's interested in TSO and a cappella. So if one of us don't post here, it quickly gets buried.

I have to admit maybe I'm getting a bit tired of Pentatonix. I didn't like most of the songs in PTX Vol 3. The only song I liked was Rather Be and La La Latch a distant second. But I'll give the christmas album a shot.

Not yet, they can still squeeze more out of it by making next year "Best of The Sing-Off". Get all the past winners and top favorite groups back for another competition. I know Street Corner Symphony, Afro Blue (now called Traces of Blue) and Deliah are still kinda alive. Get them all to compete one more time for the crown before handing it over to PTX yet again.

The 6 acappella groups that will be in The Sing-Off have been announced.

Traces - 5 women singers from New York

Timothy's Gift - A 6 women church group

The Exchange - Group comprising from several season 3 competitors.

Vanderbilt Melodores - An all-male college acapella group

A. Squared - I think this is the only group that uses effects

San Fran 6 - A newly formed group, so I can't find any videos of them.

I'm excited in spite of myself - last season disappointed me, but I still can't wait.

As an aside, it tickles me pink to see ads for Pentatonix's Christmas album all over the internet. Yay them!

Okay, I finally got the chance to watch all the videos, and I'm a lot happier. The first two girl groups were kinda meh for me, but everyone else was great.

I'm REALLY sad we won't have Ben Folds this time, though. :( I think the season 3 judges were really the best mix. Jewel ended up getting on my nerves, and Nicole was just a sober Paula Abdul. I don't know anything about the guy replacing Ben - I do hope he brings some actual knowledge of a cappella, or the judges' panel is going to be rather shallow.

And NBC's just released a first preview video... Its one of the all girls groups. Some parts were good, some parts were very off.

I'm terribly disappointed. I thought The Exchange was hands-down the best group. Honestly, I would have ranked the Melodores 4th at the highest, maybe even 5th. Just lousy. :(

Its a let down. Two songs just isn't enough for me to even understand each group, much less the individual members of the group.

Agreed. There's a reason the show needs to run multiple weeks, a couple of times per week. We need to see the development of the groups.

Here's a little "behind the scenes" video, the songs that the eliminated groups would have sung if they had not been eliminated.

San Fran 6 - All About That Base

Timothy's Gift - Son of a Preacher Man
[yt]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEoR39taoZc[/yt]

A-Squared - Latch
