The Simpsons renewed for season 23...

It's rapidly reaching the point (assuming this has not been passed already) where the amount of seasons I haven't seen of the Simpsons is in excess of the seasons I have.

And there was a time I ate and breathed this show. In the 1990s the only TV show that I watched as rigorously and religiously as the various Star Treks was the Simpsons... passions that I didn't exactly keep in the decade to follow.

At this point all I really want to do Simpson-wise is go back to season one and rewatch, oh, the first eight to nine years. They can keep churning out new seasons if they really insist, I'll keep pretending the show ended a decade ago.

Yup, that's the right plan. I do that about once a year and it allows me to happily still call myself a fan of "The Simpsons" without feeling too bad. As far as I'm concerned, the show has sucked since season 9. There have been a few good episodes between then and now, but the period of season 3-8 is incredible (seasons 1 and 2 are sloppy, but I can forgive that because the show was going through growing pains, and there are a few gems in there).

I can't think of any other series where every single episode for five seasons in a row was either very good or great. That's why the show will always have a tremendous legacy, no matter how many shitty seasons they put out. I know how to feel about these renewal announcements...sad. It just means we'll have yet another season pissing on the legacy of this show. At this point, I'll be overjoyed if and when they announce that a new season will be the show's last. Fingers still crossed for them to end it after 25. Might as well go out on a nice, significant milestone number.

I wonder if this is the most successful cartoon in the history of cartoon shows. I know that other classic cartoon shows actually had very short runs and were designed to be run in syndication, to seemingly feel like they never went off the air.

Even at it's worst, it's still better than pretty much every other show on television.

I really want it to keep going forever.

I mean, it's not that good anymore but there is something to be said for this kind of humor.

The Simpsons is, as a show, turning INTO that kind of joke! This fascinates me and now I'm rooting for them again. (After a few years of being an 'end it' guy.) Simpsons forever!

Though I don't watch new episodes of The Simpsons very much these days, I'm glad they're still making new shows. A world in which there are no new episodes of The Simpsons is a very scary thing to imagine.

Congrats to them. I don't really watch it anymore. I know it had a brief boost after the movie, but I can't tell you if they kept it. But people do watch it, it gets ratings, and there are clearly those who enjoy it and keep watching (plus, it's a great brand). Absolutely no reason to cancel it.

My family and I enjoy the Simpsons and watch every week! Even in it's current run it's still pretty darned entertaining and much preferable to the sick stuff on Family Guy. Although I got to admit I do enjoy the Cleveland Show. (Sorry FG I just don't find trashy humor -pedophiles and etc - very entertaining. Just very very creepy)

Plus, like they kept ribbing McFarland on the Hasselhoff Celebrity Roast, the Simpsons have already been there and done that...the cool stuff anyway. Jus' Sayin'

I enjoy The Simpsons, and though I only occasionally chuckle or smile at best during any recent new episode, I'm glad to see it still going on.

I think FOX renews The Simpsons just to keep the McFarland juggernaut at bay,if they didn't then we might get suck with The Meg show.

Now I don't know what kind of contracts the main voice stars have but what do you think would happen if one of them decided to leave or god forbid died, would they keep going with new voice actors or what?

Gah. There's something to be said for ending on a graceful note when your time is up, instead of limping along as long as they'll let you. Frankly, I haven't found The Simpsons relevant or entertaining in years. Give me Family Guy any day; at least an underwhelming FG episode still makes me feel something (even if it's entertained revulsion). Can't say the same for The Simpsons.

The Simpsons isn't limping along. It's crawling in desert, parched, looking to get to that pool of water it sees in the distance.

Unfortunately it's a heat shimmer.

Good news to me because otherwise we would probably get another Family Guy spinoff.

At this point, I actually find all three of the McFarlane shows, even Cleveland, more entertaining on average than the Simpsons.

And that's not because the McFarlane shows are that great, either. It's because at this point the Simpsons is just a typical dumb sitcom.

Currently, I keep the Simpsons on DVR season pass. If I'm bored or want something kind of mindless and familiar to watch before bed, I'll put one on to see if it holds my interest. About half the time it doesn't and I delete it after the first ten minutes or so.

A few years ago, the voice actors threatened to quit and Fox made it very clear they would replace them with soundalikes if need be.

At this point, even on its best nights, the current Simpsons is just...watchable. And some weeks I actually get bored and turn it off.

Currently, I can think of at least ten shows that are consistently funnier (even if not as funny as "classic" Simpsons): Community, the Venture Brothers, Always Sunny, South Park, the Office, 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, How I Met Your mother, Futurama, Archer, Conan's Show... even Family Guy and American Dad are actually funnier that the Simpsons at this point. In fact, arguably "Rescue Me" (while a flawed season of a "dramedy") was funnier than the Simpsons is these days (especially the sequences involving the guys in the firehouse).

Then there are shows which I don't watch because they're on pay cable but most people I know think are way funnier than current Simpsons, primarily "Curb Your Enthusiams" and "East Bound and Down."

And those are just the comedies. In terms of dramatic series you have: Mad Men, Breaking Bad, the Walking Dead, Terriers, Justified, Sons of Anarchy, Weeds, Dexter, Big Love and Boardwalk Empire.
